Anyone not having the 4 in 1 Whopping Cough vaccine?

I'm not anti vaccine generally but I'm not sure I want the 4 in 1 jab at 28 weeks if at all. In presuming there's no way of having just the whooping cough part on its own if necessary?

Is there anyone else not having it done?

Know vaccines can be a bit of an emotive subject so hoping this isn't going to turn into a 'get your popcorn' thread! Confused

Thanks

Zahrah5 you need to actually get it during late pregnancy for it to protect the baby I think.

Thanks

Just was worried if it is ok to get tetanus and now tetanus again.

I remember the quite uncomfortable soreness and ache in my arm for a week after that....aaah dont want to througt it tomorrow again.
I was swearing I will never take tetanus again.

WorkingBling · 28/01/2015 23:12

Babies die of whooping cough. I didn't think twice about getting it. And my arm was mildly sore for one night only. It was a complete non event.

Honestly, giving the baby extra immunity before it's born is by far the better choice. I am actually starting to get quite frustrated at people who don't see this. There is no evidence that the vaccine will harm you or the baby. There is plenty of evidence (nearly 20 dead babies) that whooping cough kills newborns.

Mumtotherescueagain · 28/01/2015 23:29

Zahrah - there's no ill effects from having another dose of tetanus vaccine. It will boost your immunity to that particularly nasty killer, that's all.

Likewise there is no good reason not to have the 4 in 1 jab at the appropriate point in pregnancy. It's safe and offers your newborn some protection against an increasingly common dangerous illness. just get the jab.

I'm 35 weeks now and havent had it.

Reason being, when my mum was pregnant with me she couldnt have it as she was epileptic. I couldnt have it when I was born, neither could my brother or sister.

When expressing my concerns to the midwife, she didnt know anything about it. I asked another midwife, who said she had been asked the same from another patient and was looking into it for her, and would get back to me. She never did. No one can tell me for definate whether or not having it would cause more harm than good, so I'm not doing it.

I get the 4 in 1 at 28 weeks and apart from the sore arm was fine.

The GP didnt seem to mind when I rejected the flu jab though as that one to me is utter nonesense and usually a year or two behind anyways. Since I didnt even get a cold this winter I am not regretting that one bit

Maxis1 · 29/01/2015 15:18

nasty thought on the side. if whooping cough keeps going around again, why isnt the NHS vaccinating adults?
Had a row about this with my OH until he finally checked with his doctor who confirmed that he had it and a boost so he should be immune. otherwise I would not have let him near the little one :O

EssexMummy123 · 29/01/2015 15:22

It's not 100% effective though - it maybe much less than 100% so still a good idea to be cautious around people with suspicious sounding coughs.

Jackieharris · 29/01/2015 17:07

It's not 'increasingly common'.

Stop misinforming people.

Mums have a right to make an informed choice based on facts not scaremongering.

There was an outbreak in 2012. The incidence has been decreasing steadily since 2013.

Mumtotherescueagain · 29/01/2015 17:15

2013 when they started vaccinating mums would that be? When generally awareness was raised and older children were more likely to get a booster too? No wonder cases have decreased since then.

meditrina · 29/01/2015 17:20

Whooping cough is down from its peak (c.9,300 cases 2012) but at c.4,600 in 2013 (last year for which number available) it's many many more cases than a decade earlier (2003 c.190, a low year, but early 00s did not exceed c.360).

I wonder when the 2014 will be available. I'd be interested to see how much it's decreased again.

NOIDS report here and looks as if it's around the 8000 mark.
