Gtt test and a nasty cold

I am supposed to be doing my gtt test tomorrow at the hospital. I have a nasty cold and all I can stomach is fruit and sugary food. No healthy carbs or protein. Will this and the illness impact my gtt test? Don't want a false reading of gestational diabetes.

I think if your body is processing sugar/ carbs as it should, then you should get a normal GTT result regardless. If the test isn't normal, it'll be because there is an element of diabetes/ insulin resistance going on, and it really is best to know for you and baby. I'd go if I were you.

I don't know if it will affect the results but it won't exactly be easy feeling well enough to have the test if that's how you're feeling. You are supposed to eat a reasonable amount of carbs (sugar counts) for the few days before the test otherwise you can get a false reading of NOT having GDM, I'm led to believe. What time is your appointment? Can you phone up first? You can always reschedule if you need to.

Thank you for your replies. Was meant to be taking the lucozade at 7 am for a blood test at 9am. Not sure I am well enough to go the hospital anyway so think I will delay it.

Interesting about the carbs before the gtt. I know I am at higher risk at gd due to my pcos (which explained previous blood sugar issues) but I have been eating low gi for years now and managed to avoid it in my last pregnancy. Don't want to end up on drugs in this pregnancy if I can control it with my diet.

You should be having a blood test before the lucozade as well as after. Your fasting blood glucose is as important as the one after the lucozade. And you can't really do anything in between having the lucozade and the blood test. You're not even meant to go for a wander. I think you need to clarify these details before you go and have the test anyway.

Noroom - that is what I thought too (as that is what I had last time in 2012). but the midwife insisted they had changed how it was done and I had the lucozade at home and then went in for the blood test 2 hours later.

Hi everyone. I've just been diagnosed with GD ... Didnt know PCOS was a factor. I generally eat quite well and dont have so much sugar in my diet except i do eat carbs often but over xmas i had cravings for coke and chocolate. I was shocked to find out i had it and wondered why i would have it especially when it doesnt run in my family

I've just started a support thread for GDM - whether you are being tested or diagnosed. It's in the pregnancy section. Come and chat!
