Hi I'm 31 weeks and 2 days and baby's head still isn't engaged!! When/if will I need some form of intervention and what kind of thing can be done? Am honestly sick of being pregnant now, uncomfortable, unbearable heartburn, just generally fed up was really hoping she would be engaged by now so at least it would feel like I'm on the way to finally meeting her :(

The baby being engaged has absolutely nothing to do with how soon you will go into labour. They can engage now, or at 40 weeks, or as you go into labour. It really means absolutely nothing.

Just try and relax. I know that sounds trite, but I've had three babies, all late. If you start counting the days when you still have 9 weeks to go (so potentially 11 weeks to go) you will drive yourself round the twist. It's tough when you are uncomfortable, but take it a day at a time.

What do you mean by intervention? There's nothing that can medically make a baby engage. Although bouncing on a birth ball, etc can help if they are ready to do it.

My baby has only just engaged at 38 weeks and went from not being engaged at all to almost completely in a couple of days. birthing ball bouncing may encourage it but it's still fairly early I think at 36 weeks. plenty of time for engagement to happen

Just re read my post that should definitely say 36 weeks +2!!!!!!!!!

Sorry. I assumed the typo was the title Smile.

Still, 36 weeks is masses of time. Hang in there.

DS2 was not engaged at 11am and was born at 10pm - he had been in and out of engaged since 33 weeks - it really doesn't mean anything

Thank you for all your comments she is literally still doing complete somersaults and doesn't stay in any one position for long

36+3 here & not engaged either. Midwives not bothered in the slightest, best thing was that baby's healthy & head down.

What position is yours in?

My first bub didn't engage until 38 weeks.....12 hours before being born! They come when they come and both of us were fine (he's a 14yr old gangly mountain of a ds now!)

shushpenfold · 22/01/2015 13:07

PS - the only thing they did realise though (as he came out face up!) was that he had been undiagnosed as back to back and this can make it more likely that your waters will break early as they engage. I still remember the midwife advising us of a bald baby and then realising she'd been stroking his forehead when he came out with significant hair!

To be honest you'd probably be more frustrated if the baby was engaged already and you were sitting around waiting, far more uncomfortable too!! DS2 was engaged for many weeks before I was induced. Is this your first? I don't think it is common for first babies to engage early before coming. Sorry to say this but you're still only 36 weeks, hang in there....

For some reason my username is different on my phone still to the iPad!!! Baby isn't settling in to any one position yet she's still going from head down to sideways to head up literally as if she is doing somersaults
