exceptionally high sugar in urine?

Hi all, I am 32+1 with DS3. Just back from routine midwife check today and had exceptionally high sugar in my urine, like, off the chart! She asked what I had eaten before, but I have only had wheatabix with light sprinkling of sugar and some very weak diluting juice so shouldn't have thought that would cause off the chart... Not had any issues with sugar in urine at all this pregnancy. With DS2 I did have one instance of it but passed the glucose tolerance test. No history of diabetes in family and I am a healthy weight. Going to do a glucose tolerance test, but now feeling slightly concerned.... What might have caused this? Could it just be a random blip?!

(not having a straight forward preg this time - just out of hospital again after 3rd bleed relating to marginal previa, baby currently transverse and back to back, had strep-B infection, low iron and bp... DS1 arrived 33+5 after an abruption altho DS2 was on time, feeling bit paranoid now)

Meant to say, growth scan yesterday at hospital measuring average baby size, and due for another scan at 36 weeks to check placenta and growth.

Was MW concerned at all? I have Glucose in urine on n off quite a bit, but nothing is wrong, No Diabetes etc. I think it's just a one off for you, what did MW suggest?

Ange77 · 21/01/2015 22:04

I had this on one occasion with my last pregnancy. Mw asked me to lay off all cakes, biccies, fruit juices, etc anything that was sugary for two weeks, just to make sure that at my next test it was back to normal. That was a hard fortnight! But I did it and all was well. Might be worth a try if your worried.

She was concerned because it was literally off the chart high! I suppose the GTT tomorrow will give a more accurate idea... Think I am going to seriously cut down the sugar anyway just in case...

I believe stress hormones can cause high sugar so perhaps that is related giving that I am just out of hospital which was kinda stressful...

If it does turn out to be GD (and I had it twice) you'll get loads of support and it will be fine.

For future reference though, cereal with sugar on it, milk and fruit juice is an exceptionally sugary meal!

weeblueberry · 21/01/2015 22:21

Surely not if the squash is sugar free? There's really only sugar in the actual sugar then isn't there?

CorporateRockWhore · 21/01/2015 22:24

Milk is very sugary, actual sugar was then dissolved in it and OP doesn't say the juice was sugar free.

Milk did for my blood sugar every time when I had GD. And the worst thing you can have is fruit juice; all the goodness is processed out and its scarily sugary.

CurlsLDN · 21/01/2015 22:34

I don't have experience of gd, but had to follow a low gi diet for a while for other reasons. The glyceamic index of a food measures how much it affects your blood sugar level. Pure glucose is measured at 100, and everything else is compared to that.
Table sugar has a gi of 64, weetabix is 69! I can't find a measure for fruit squash, but fruit drinks do tend to be very high.
Here's where I got the weetabix measure from
www.weightlossresources.co.uk/diet/gi_diet/glycaemic_index_tables.htm
So it could just be a spike caused by your breakfast

sleepybee · 21/01/2015 23:38

My midwife says to only bring first morning urine sample to my appointments for dip testing as if you eat then take a sample it will give a false reading.

Cereal with sugar & milk is high sugar as its carbohydrates. Carbs = sugar same with potatoes, pasta, bread they will all spike your blood sugar

capecath · 22/01/2015 07:56

Thanks for the feedback. The Squash is sugar free and was very weak anyway. I suppose it could have been the cereal and milk although still seems crazy that that could make it go off chart! Feeling awful this morning, hope I can cope without brekkie...

I had this, but the GTT was fine. It can be an anomaly. Good luck

tuffgingernut · 22/01/2015 08:21

I have this problem if I eat porridge/cereal before an appointment. Passed GTT test easily though. I was just informed to avoid sugar and lots of carbs whenever possible. (I'm failing miserably at this)
