Weight gain during pregnancy

Can one of the further-along ladies give me some advice on weight gain? I should be about 14w this thurs based on last week's 12w scan (which put me at 13w). So firmly in the second trimester (yay!)
I lost around 5-6kgs across the first trimester as I wasn't really eating much. Now I'm back on most foods (not meat bleurgh) but eating about 1800cal per day, so normal. I've struggled with my weight my whole life, I started the pregnancy just over 25bmi so ever so slightly overweight but nothing major. I'm not sure if I should be aiming to gain at the moment (so eating more than that) or staying about the same, and I'm not seeing my MW for another 3 weeks. I just want to make sure I don't gain too much weight in the pregnancy, just whatever is healthy for me & bub.
Thanks!

BMI of 23 at the start of the pregnancy and I've put on 2 stone in total (37 weeks). It was around the same last time and I'd lost everything I'd put on and some more after 2-3 months.

I wouldn't worry too much, eat sensibly and see what happens. Everyone's response to pregnancy is different, what with size of baby, placenta, amount of fluid and extra blood volume. As long as you don't see it as a license to eat cake you will be fine.

Wenglish glad you find it helpful. I keep a weight diary (going on a scale once a week, always Sunday mornings) and compare with the data in the calculator generated table. Helps to keep a good overview ;)

20w and up about 7kg. Any advice on strategirs to avoid excessive toast consumption during the night appreciated! Sleeping poorly.

Completely agree about no need for extra calories until about 3rd trimester. (Unless you are underweight).

As pp said not everyone needs 2000 cals anyway.

I went up from 8st7 to over 11st with dc1. It was all bump. It was gone within 10 days with bf. (And possibly hyperthyroid). At 5'4 7lb10 baby.

Im 16w now and a bit nervous about weighing myself.
It seems odd to me i can go from bmi 21 or so and get to 39w pg and just go into overweight bmi. Maybe if fat was a difficult to manoeuvre as a pg belly it would be off putting.
I dont want to gain too much as due to pcos im at risk for GD. Baby already measuring 4 days ahead at 13w Shock.
I found the gain got really fast towards the end.

diet. Maybe lots of high fibre low gi foods. Swap to brown toast etc, stay full for longer. And i find taste isnt as good so wouldnt eat too much. Could you be thirsty rather than hungry?

With dd1 I gained a whopping 46lbs, with dd2 I gained a slightly smaller 41lbs. I'd gained 4lbs in the first trimester with both and steadily gained it up to term. I had 8lb babies. This time my starting weight was much higher and this time I have lost 5lbs so far. The plan is to keep losing but the weight calculator says I should aim to gain 11-20lbs Max.
I aim to eat a max of 1800 cals but some days I eat tonnes less as I'm just not hungry. With dd1 and 2 I used the 'eating for 2' excuse, thankfully after having dd2 a stone came off right away and I was back to pre preg weight by about 4 months.
I think as long as you eat sensibly, yes your allowed bad days every so often, you'll be fine :) just remember, whatever you gain, you'll probably want to get off afterwards :)

Thanks naty1. Think i am drinking enough. I'm good at high fibre & fruit/veg but love carbs....suspect some will power needed. Have ordered some wholemeal pasta on internet shop.

I'm 24 weeks and have gained just under a stone so far (was 9st3, now around 10st2).

Tbh I'm not worrying... I think I maybe am eating a bit too much but I'm bloody starving all the time!

I figure it'll all right itself in time.

I gained 10kg, going from 90 to 100kg with my first baby.

Silverjohnleggedit · 24/01/2015 08:41

I had twins and gained nearly 2lbs a week - I saw my obstetrician every two weeks and I wondered why she had never weighed me - she suggested I threw my scales out the bathroom window as there was no way to tell what was fat, fluid or babies and I should just eat normally, so I think in total I gained around 50lbs. Two weeks after giving birth I weighed myself and I had lost 43lbs - in other words mostly fluid, the babies weighed a total of 9lbs.

No 1, I gained 12 kg and was back to pre-pregnancy weight within a week. No 2, I gained 15 kg and stayed 5-7 kg heavier afterwards than pre-pregnancy weight. No 3, gained 10 kg and lost it all (back to below DD2 post pregnancy weight) very quickly. No 4, started pregnancy 8 kg heavier than I should have (12 year gap, slow creep upwards through my 30s). Put on 5 kg and lost 12 kg within a week of having her so, so ended up lighter than pre-pregnancy. This has mostly crept back on since her birth- I am now 7 kg heavier than I should be (was 61kg a week after her birth, now 67 kg). Seems very random tbh. Pregnancies 1, 3 and 4 my main obsession was crunching ice and did not snack. Pregnancy 2, it was sweet things and a fair amount of snacking. Predictably, I put on more weight in pregnancy 2 and was left with more to shed afterwards.

Bmi of 18. Put in 2 stone with both pregnancies. Lost through breastfeeding and walking, but went back to the gym to tone up. Most of the weight was put on in first 16 weeks.

Gunpowder · 24/01/2015 19:39

Thanks for the calculator from me too Sue. Was horrified to find out I'd put on over 7kg (am only 26 wks) but calculator says it's in my range. Phew. Smile

Guyropes · 24/01/2015 22:32

Charlie... My midwife said the recommendation was to put on no more than 10kg.

As pregnancy progresses, your stomach will be constricted. In the past I found this really handy as it allowed me an opportunity to retrain myself to feel full, and not overeat. I'm hoping I have the same experience this time!

Silverjohnleggedit · 25/01/2015 08:32

Thing is some people like me put on masses of fluid, my body became incredibly swollen all over. The danger in suggesting a simplistic weight limit is that the midwife has no clue whether you have gained water or fat. It's best to focus on what you are eating rather than the number on the scales.

naty1 · 25/01/2015 14:41

Though i think you can see water weight gain in say feet.

debbi80 · 16/02/2015 14:58
