I am really wanting one once I hit 16 weeks - just how accurate are they though?

My understanding is that sometimes they can tell without a doubt, sometimes it is less clear and other times they just can't see.

i had one at 15weeks 6 days
was brilliant said it was a boy and he was , they really took the time explaining things for me and getting a good potty shot lol

even got a sneaky 4d view

I had one and you could clearly see our DD's 'burger' (their term, not mine Grin ) And like previous poster they flipped it to 4D and had we had a lovely look at her like that as well. Smile

I had a private 4D scan at 31 weeks which was amazing despite baby being asleep the whole time! We wanted to wait until we had the 20 week scan at the hospital to give us their opinion on the sex but they couldn't have been more vague despite baby being in the perfect position to determine 'he' or 'she'. From what I could see on the monitor (a little burger) I guessed a girl and the Sonographer gave a vague answer to confirm my guess. However, at the private scan the Sonographer was certain we were having a girl and didn't doubt it one bit. She told us how many people she had seen from Derriford Hospital in Plymouth who had been told they were having a particular sex and had got them wrong most of the time so she gave the parents the actual sex which was correct! You can never guarantee the sex either way but I highly recommend the private scans- especially the 4D scan around 30 weeks, there's so much detail (but try to book a time when you know baby is usually awake- I didnt give it any thought!) We saw DD rub her face, pucker her lips and squirm around...amazing Smile

I had one on Friday (16 weeks on the dot) and am having a lovely little boy! I thought I was having a girl the whole time before that but obviously didn't mind whether the baby was a boy or a girl as long as I have a healthy baby...

We saw his little boy bits on the scan (he'll love talking about that when he is a teenager I am sure!) and also saw his scrumptious little face on 4D! I am totally in love with his little gorgeousness!

I would recommend it if you want to find out the gender before the big day, plus it is lovely to see baby in the massive gap between 12 and 20 week scans.

I feel so much more bonded to my baby now, before it was all a bit abstract but now I know he is a he, I am thinking about names, clothes etc - it is so much more real and exciting to me.

There is no 100% guarantee of gender of course but we got a pretty good view so I am confident they are correct - will confirm at the NHS 20 week scan!

I had one at just over 17 weeks, was lovely as I was able to take my parents along as well, and she took her time and showed us a lot and talked us through what everything was and then flipped the heartbeat on which my DH hadn't heard yet :) she then flipped over to 4d without telling us as an extra bonus and gave us a copy of the 4d image :) we had a definite for it being a girl, couldn't get confirmation at our 20 week scan though because she was stubborn, curled up and apparently only willing to allow the measurements they needed lol

kaykayred · 18/01/2015 12:14

Can you only find the sex of the baby through private scans?

That sounds absolutely ridiculous!!!

applecore0317 · 18/01/2015 12:25

kaykayred you can find out at your anomaly scan, but I wanted to my parents to be able to see one of the scans so decided to have a private scan and find out the gender at the same time, they make a real effort to try and find if they can. Whereas the NHS focus on getting the much neesed measurements and looking at the heart and brain over finding out the sex, as they should :)

DoctorDonnaNoble · 18/01/2015 12:25

I think there's a risk of people complaining/suing if they get it wrong and sometimes by the nature of things you can't see clearly.

It's against the local hospital policy in my area to find out the sex of the baby. I don't mind, will wait until he or she is born. It's not that long a wait.

Dogsmom · 18/01/2015 21:17

I had one with dd1 at 16 weeks and this one at 17 weeks and loved them both.

They're so much more personal and relaxing than the nhs ones, I know they're for anomalies etc and meant to be medical but I found I got very anxious for those ones as they are specifically looking for things wrong plus the sonographers were busy taking measurements and typing things in other than discussing the baby (which I agree is how it should be).

The private ones last around 20 minutes and they spend time showing you all the individual bits and chatting about them, you also get to see them in 4d which is nice but be aware that at 16 weeks they aren't very padded out so you wont see a cute chubby baby Smile

Regarding telling you the sex our sonographer said they check 3x thoroughly and have to be sure that if it were their baby they would be confident to buy pink/blue before announcing it, if they have any doubts they will either ask you to go for a walk and go back or return the following week.

I've felt differently about both of my daughters once I knew what sex they were too, more bonded in a way, they suddenly became 'she' and not 'it' plus I love being organised and it's been lovely preparing for them, I've never been interested in the whole 'husband announcing it' at the birth and after my first which ended in a room full of people being there because she was in distress I know the whole moment would never have been special anyway because we were both so focused on her being ok than what sex she was.

RoundRobinSparkles · 18/01/2015 21:22

My friend had one yesterday at 16 and a half weeks! I hope it's accurate as she's already been out and bought loads of pink things! GrinGrin

It was pretty clear from what I gather and the sonographer was very confident.

I had an NHS scan at 16 weeks, with my first, and she told me girl. She was correct, DD1 is now 7 and a half.

supersupersupershock · 19/01/2015 09:50

Ok, I'm decided, going to book one!

I had one at 16 weeks and was told a boy, but they were only 80% sure so come back next week to re-check.

Was a girl! Since had it confirmed at 20 week, 4d scan at 27 week, and growth scan at 32. Her bits were just too swollen to tell at 16 weeks!

Hope it goes well :D

fattycow · 19/01/2015 12:38

You cannot tell gender for a few years at least. For the sex I would recommend waiting until 20 weeks before looking, but the result is never 100% sure!

Only1scoop · 19/01/2015 12:40

No I had a private anomaly scan though and they offered to tell us sex of baby after all the important stuff done.
