Is this still a no-no? I remember being told not to sleep on my back with my first DC as during pregnancy it is dangerous,haven't heard any mention of it this pregnancy,are they just assuming I remember or has the advice changed?I think I would be more comfortable on my back if possible.

I think the advice is still to sleep on your side.

Personally I mostly sleep on my side anyway; I did wake up on my back the other night and felt a bit breathless, but not sure if that was just a coincidence!

I believe it is still the advice to sleep on your side, especially later on. I don't think it's such an issue during the first half of the pregnancy as you don't have the weight of the baby pressing down on your major blood vessels until later on.

Yeah dont worry until after 24 wks (depending on who you speak to ... sooner with twins) Your main blood vessels run down the your body slightly to the right of the middle. So if you lay flat your uterus compresses them and slows the blood round your body and to the baby. It can make you dizzy and affect the babies heart rate.

This is why you are advised to lie either tilted to the left or right over on either side. Putting a pillow under your right hip and back will give enough tilt to move your uterus away from the vessels if you need to be semi flat. Tends to be too uncomfy to lie flat anyway!

I'm 34 weeks and keep waking up on my back, I don't think there's much you can do about it especially if you get hip pain, I do readjust myself but will wake on my back a few hours later.

Didn't know it was dangerous but it does cause piles which are both unpleasant and very uncomfortable

I think if you prop up with pillows so you're not completely flat it's ok & maybe a pillow under you're low back or legs

i have never been told not to sleep on my back :/ why do they say not to? as dogsmom says not much you can do. people move in their sleep. lay different ways and dont always know.

It is recommended to get used to sleeping on your side from the second trimester onwards because the weight of the baby and waters could press on major blood vessel which can affect your blood pressure and blood flow.

Also sleeping on left side helps the baby get into the "correct" position. If you're on your back baby is likely to lie "back to back".

After 34w it's just really not comfortable and you will wake up if on your back. Believe me.
