Nausea - help :(

Hello, I am 11+4 and really struggling with Nausea. I have just been sick for the first time too :( It has definitely got worse over the last couple of weeks and I am finding it quite difficult getting through work and the rest of the day as I feel constantly sick. The only thing that seems to relieve it for a bit is boiled mints and I don't want to be effectively chain smoking loads of sugary sweets as that is no good for either of us. I just wondered if anyone has any recommendations for anything else I could try? Ginger biscuits don't really help either. Thank you. Smile

Congratulations!
I'm afraid I've no real help as I literally ate whatever I could stomach to get me through the day. Eating made me sick however not eating made me more sick with nothing to bring up! So I opted for stuffing my face all day and just ate whatever I fancied.

Oh, I feel for you. I had hyperemesis fron 4 weeks with my DS and I was so sick but the nausea is just so draining and constant.

Nothing really helped until I ended up in hospital and then got antiemetics which I took until 16w when it started to die down.

I would just advise you rest all you can and indulge in any cravings you do have. Keep yourself hydrated and if you really are struggling go to your GP. Ooh, I did carry around a lemon and did sniff it when it got really bad and that seemed to briefly reset my brain, especially when everything smelt awful!

I know a couple of people who said that seabands helped. They're wristbands with a bobble that presses on a pressure point that's supposed to stop nausea. Might be worth a try.

I tried eating crystallized ginger candies for nausea, but I'm not sure that helped much. I kept some Rice Chex at home and at work for days when I was too nauseous to think about eating anything else for breakfast or lunch. Whenever possible, I avoided smells that I knew to be triggering (bacon was a big one). I'm prone to motion sickness, and I found that got worse when I was pregnant, so I avoided motion sickness triggers.

I found it useful to get a sleeve of 32 ounce (a little less than 1 liter) paper cups from a restaurant supply store, and keep some with me wherever I went (especially in my car). I also keep a few gallon (about 4 liters) size Ziploc plastic bags in my purse. I didn't always get much warning before I started vomiting, and having those around meant there was at least less mess and potential public humiliation to deal with. It also means less anxiety about "what if I vomit in such-and-such place". (and I found that anxiety could trigger nausea for me) Wearing a maxi pad was also helpful, since I sometimes leaked some pee when I vomited. I liked the 32 ounce cups, because they have a nice big opening, fit in the cup holder of my car, could be thrown out after use, and I don't remember ever vomiting enough to overflow one. I went with the gallon Ziplocs because they have a nice big opening and are disposable.

I second the Sea Bands suggestion. They really help. Also if you can afford some acupuncture that helps too (balances out your hormones). Finally if your really struggling go to the GP. Mine prescribed be Cyclizine. It's an antihistamine which is safe in pregnancy. Took me from awful to almost normal!

Vitamin B6 in quite a high dose - at least 150mgs a day - so much more than is in a standard pregnancy vitamin is helpful.

Or go to the doctor and get a prescription - I second the vote for cyclizine which is safe and many people find to be very effective.

Cyclizine helped me feel more normal although the nausea was still there but I could manage going to work. I stopped it though after the pharmacist insisted on ringing the GP when I got a second prescription and told me I shouldn't be taking it during pregnancy. Absolute rubbish but after infertility and a miscarriage it was enough to put me off.

I just ate whatever I could stomach. Salt and vinegar crisps, mashed potato, plain pasta, extra strong mints and ice lollies mostly. Sorry if any of that had made you feel sick!

Thank you everyone, I may need to go to the GP if it gets any worse as I can't really have any time off ill as we are so busy at work at the moment.

I had nausea & sickness from 6 to 13 weeks and I found the travel bands helped a lot. Also, eating little and often made it a little easier. Hopefully you won't have it much longer.

Hi there, I am 21 weeks and have been sick since about 5 weeks, do I know how you feel. Google 'lillipops' and buy them direct off of the site, they have really helped me, you can buy a variety pack and see which ones work for you. Ice cold water helps too, as does making sure you are very hydrated. I am also on metoclapramide three times a day from the Dr. Not being tired helps too, so get enough sleep!

Ask for cyclizine. Some GPs are more sympathetic than others so if they refuse, speak to your midwife and they'll sort you out.

I had hyperemesis with both pregnancies and it's horrific. I started cyclizine sooner the second time and it allowed me to stay at work for most of the time. But take time off if you need it - rest is the no1 thing that helps.

And yes to eating whatever you want... I think logically keeping your sugar levels stable would help so eat high protein, high fibre - but I couldn't do this at all and lived on baked potatoes, crisps, wine gums and ice lollies (I strongly recommend Tesco finest pink lady apple and elderflower lollies). Simple carbs work best! And don't worry about nutrition, babies take what they need, just keep taking a good pregnancy multivitamin and eat a packet of ham whenever you think you can face protein. Or chicken nuggets happy meal is good and you can have fresh orange juice with it! I couldn't face cooking due to the smells but could usually manage something cooked if it was given to me.

I also found that drinking water with meals would make me sick - drink water an hour after meals.

Cyclizine has a better safety profile than metoclopromide.
Large doses of metoclopromide/long term use (e.g. more than 12 weeks at the absolute most) are associated with a risk of irreversible muscle tremors and twitches.

muffin! Wow, I was on Cyclizine and Metoclopromide for 12 weeks and had about another month's worth (I stopped taking them as I generally felt better!)

I had no idea that was a risk, my midwife and GP both advised they were find to take long term! Glad I stopped now!

Resting helps so do get time off work if you can or at least get someone to help at home with cooking, cleaning, entertaining other DCs... take as many short cuts as you need, buy ready meals, use the tumble dryer, don't make commitments that will tire you out etc.
