Is weight loss normal

Hi all

I am just coming up to 12 weeks pregnant and have found I've lost a few pounds. This is not down to being sick as although I've felt nauseous I've not actually been sick. In fact, as I put on another post, I have been eating lots - of all the wrong stuff, very carb heavy.

I was overweight to start with and have a BMI of 33. Weirdly my clothes also feel tighter but the scales say less

Normally with what I've been eating I'd expect to put on weight - should I be concerned?

No - loads of people lose weight I unfortunately have an I'm I my 7 weeks an my pre pregnancy bmi was 14 so in concerned.

But most women lose weight in the first trimester

Beggy15 · 14/01/2015 08:36

I am only* for goodness sake I hate my phone

Olivexo · 14/01/2015 08:44

Your bmi was 14?!? Gosh, are you ok now?

TwigletFiend · 14/01/2015 08:44

With a slightly raised BMI, I would think it is fairly common - you may be eating lots of carbs, but your body was probably using them up more efficiently than before as your placenta was being formed. Prior to that your body has to work harder to feed baby and your systems go a bit into overdrive. Chances are it will stabilise around this time because the placenta takes over. However, do keep an eye on it and make sure you're getting enough essential vitamins - are you taking a vitamin tablet?

I lost a few kilos in first trimester, probably due to throwing up and not drinking alcohol.
Had put it back on by end of 2nd trimester leaving me just 10 weeks to rue/celebrate excessive cake munching.

I lost a stone and a half in the first trimester of my first pregnancy. Embarrassingly I think part of that was because I wasn't drinking wine! I'm now 15 weeks with my second and have lost around 2lbs since getting pregnant.

Bondy83 · 14/01/2015 08:55

It's completely normal I had a starting bmi of 30 I lost 21lb and at 34wk ive only put 2lb back on and bsby is measuring absolutely fine

MissTwister · 14/01/2015 09:43

Thanks all for your responses - it's only a few pounds so all seems okay

Yes Twiglet, I am taking Pregnacare and also now trying to eat a bit more fruit and veg!

I did wonder about the drinking as I was quite a big alcohol drinker - my eyes have never looked so clear too!!

I'm a recovering anorexic :) (apparently) so it's a shock I'm even pregnant.

My friend lost over a stone in her first trimester I think everyone is different but weight loss appears to be common

Chickenfillets · 14/01/2015 10:37

I'm 23 week pg and Iv lost half a stone. And that's been over the Christmas period when Iv been indulging in all sorts of crappy food. I was concerned as I thought I should be gaining weight but was reassured when my mother told me she lost weight when pg with me. And I was a very big baby! Smile

ShootTheMoon · 14/01/2015 14:39

twister alcohol is really high in calories, so it could easily just be the lack of alcohol - you wouldn't be the first to find that!

I unfortunately go the other way as I tend to eat to calm down the heartburn. I'm hoping that recognising the heart burn earlier this time will help with my weight gain (I'm hitting the rennies instead of the carbs this time!) but I also tend to put on a ridiculous amount of water weight in pg. The good thing is that it all goes - when DD was about to turn 1 I was a full 20lbs lighter than I was when I first fell pregnant!

CommanderShepard · 14/01/2015 15:09

I lost 2 stones with DD. Hyperemesis is a hell of a diet.

I havent vomited and have eaten like a horse, but weigh less now at 16 weeks than I did to start. BMI 35.
