Hello, I am looking for info about the whooping cough vaccine.
I am 34 weeks pregnant and trying to decide whether to have the vaccination or not.
I have read lots about it on the internet and there seem to be good arguments on both sides.
I am a bit concerned that the vaccination changed from Repevax to Boostrix IPV this summer so little will be known about any bad side effects yet.
I think I am leaning more towards having it done though.
Has anyone else specifically had the Boostrix IPV jab and, if so, what was your experience?

Hi, i am new to all of this and i am also looking for any info on the boostrix jab also, i am 30 weeks pregnant with my 4th my youngest is 7 so when i had her there were no vaccinations for pregnant women. I am leaning more towards not having the jab as everybody can have different reactions towards injections it's not to say that because the next person was ok that i will be or that my baby will be ,nobody can tell what the outcome will be , and yes there is a chance that my baby could catch whooping couch but where i live in scotland i have not heard of any cases but i am going to speak to my doctor about it as am still unsure what to do.

Hi. I am 37 weeks pregnant and I had this jab before Xmas. Also had the flu jab. Personally, I had no problems at all with either of them and was happy with the testing and information that's available. From what I'd heard about whooping cough (from 'back in the day' when it was more common), it's not something I wanted to risk for a small baby, even though - as you say 6T - it's not exactly common. So for me, this seemed the less risky option. Sorry I can't help more, but that's all i can say from my experience.

If I di decide to have it done (I'm very undecided at the moment, I think I'd rather have the Boostrix as the precautions for Repevax states not suitable for pregnant women when given as a combined dose! Confused

I had this a couple of weeks ago, my husband had whooping cough as an adult and it was truly awful, I can't imagine how terrifying it would have been in a small infant. Any drugs are very rigorously tested before being used so I had no worries about it being new. I had a sore (like bruised) arm for a day or two, but that was it and definitely worth it to avoid baby getting whooping cough. If there's nothing in your medical history to suggest you shouldn't have it I would definitely have it done.

After agonising over this for ages I decided not to get the vaccination in the end for a number of reasons.
I called my local health protection team and spoke to a nurse who kindly provided me with the figures for whooping cough cases over the last few years. There were very few cases in my region in 2014 (less than 10) so we weren't currently in an epidemic.
I also read quite a bit about Boostrix potentially having a blunting effect on the whooping cough immunisations they receive from 2 months old, which seemed like a big negative to me.
My child has now had his vaccinations and is perfectly healthy.
I chose not to get the Boostrix vaccination while pregnant as I didn't feel happy it was safe. However, I know a lot of people who had it with no problems at all.
I feel for anyone struggling with this decision. I spent a lot of time worrying about it and whether I was doing the right thing for my unborn baby. A very wise person helped me get it in to perspective by reminding me that my baby will face lots of dangers throughout his life, starting with childbirth, and there is no point getting so stressed about one thing.
We can't control everything unfortunately and just have to do what we think is best to keep them safe.
