Iron...

Hi everyone- merry Christmas!

I have been prescribed iron tablets by the doctor as bloods showed that I was slightly anaemic. Anyway, struggled to tolerate them- dreadful indigestion- so was changed to a liquid supplement. I thought this was better, but after a couple of days the indigestion was back! Feel like I've got something stuck in my throat permanently and terrible burping (sorry!).

Someone recommended trying Spatone- is this a suitable alternative? Will it get my iron levels up? Really don't want to suffer this for the next 8 weeks :(. I think I'll be giving the iron a miss tonight.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated xx

I am taking spatone for the same reason. I cannot tolerate iron tablets. I take it twice a day with a glass of orange juice. Only been doing it a week though so can't say whether it has worked yet.I am also eating kale and spinach more regularly. I think it depend how low your levels are. Mine are 10.5 which is borderline so I am hoping spaying will be enough.

I got told the same at 32 weeks. I hate the iron tablets. I did three days before giving up. I'm not going to die and baby is fine.

Spatone not spaying!

Spa tone was great for me, though my iron levels were always ok during pregnancy but always plummeted after delivery. The spa tone helped build reserves so that the drop post partum had less effect. I kept up the spatone all the time I was breastfeeding too. I got mine via Amazon subscribe and save, as my local boots would only ever have two packs, meaning I couldn't get them 3 for 2.

Thanks for the advice ladies- I think I'll give it a try xx

Ask the GP to prescribe you this:

www.netdoctor.co.uk/diet-and-nutrition/medicines/ferrograd.html

It is slow release so it doesn't impact the digestive system normally.

I'm on Iron Tabs now as my levels r 9. Something, and they give me a terrible upset tummy, started taking them every other day but I think I may give Spatone a go.

Spatone did the trick for me during my last pregnancy. Fingers crossed it will repeat the trick this time around.

My MW told me it was what she used when she was pregnant when I first told her I was on it.

Yep used spatone when I struggled with the iron tablets after birth. Hope it works for you. X

How far gone are you?

Less than 8 weeks do not miss a dose.
8-12 miss one dose when the doses are so high will be fine.
12+ doesn't make any difference to the baby

My dd is affected by neural tube defects. If you have really low iron levels it's worth taking the supplements.

Thanks ladies, I am 32 weeks gone - it was picked up on my 28 week bloods xx

The indigestion might be wheat related. It was for me and my friend - it stopped every time we didn't eat the stuff
