Measuring 37.5 weeks at 34 weeks

Hello, just tapping into the collective wisdom of you all...

I went in for monitoring this morning at my labour ward as I'd noticed a decrease in baby's movement. The trace was great, baby is fine, but the midwife said that my bump is massive!

Apparently I'm measuring more like 37.5 weeks, well above the 90th line on my personalised growth chart.

She has put in for me to have a scan to check baby's size, but I'm guessing that as there is no immediate danger or won't be until after Christmas.

Does anyone have experience of this and what implications there might be?

The main causes seem to be GD, wrong dates or polyanhydramnios or just a big baby.

I'm not panicking yet! I would like to hear from others who are/have been in the same situation!

Well. Apparently I was measuring way too small at almost full term. I went for a scan and when the hospital midwives actually felt the baby they said it was fine and I just had a small bump. But they had to scan me because I'd gotten that worked up about my baby not growing that they had to put my mind at rest somehow. I was in bits.

He was fine. Very average.

Hmm. It does seem that there is lots of scope for variation between different women (& their individual) pregnancies, but once they mention it your mind starts thinking through all possibilities! Hope all goes well for your birth, Hurr1cane.

I was measuring a couple of weeks along from about 35 weeks with DS - was consistently told he'd be a whopper etc. When he finally arrived at 40+14 he was only 8lbs - but I had heaps of water so we think that was the cause of the large bump. DH had to be dispatched to Sainsburys for more newborn clothes as we had been convinced he'd be out of them so soon we'd not got many.

Hurr1cane · 21/12/2014 16:37

That was over 8 years ago Grin he was very average measurement wise though thank you

Onlygirlinmyhouse1 · 21/12/2014 16:49

I'm currently 29 wks and they are reckoning I'm measuring around 31 ish weeks though growth scan indicates baby is around 3lb just now my babies have all been over 9lb so I'm expecting this one to be the same yet this is the smallest bump I've ever had(in my opinion) I've just had the gd testing so awaiting the results of that. I had a scan to check as I'd not felt baby move as much & all looks fine. Hope all is well for you, you might find that you have a lot of fluid which is causing bump yo be bigger!

I've had some trouble with my growth chart and measurements in all 4 of my pregnancies. With DC1, I was enormous and nobody seemed to notice. I kept measuring a week more here and there, my midwife didn't seem to be concerned. I had him at 40+11 and he was 9lb 2.5oz (not considered a big one) I had a ton of water and the midwife said my placenta was the biggest she'd ever seen, in fact I think the words she used were 'like a bedsheet '! DC2, I had to have glucose tests but she was 8lb 12, a walk in the park compared to the first, DC3 was 8lb 9 and DC4 8lb 7.

They've gone down in weight every time, despite telling me a bigger weight than they actually were and I've been a different shape with each one. I wouldn't freak out. There's a lot of room for error. I don't think its that reliable.

Melonhead11 · 21/12/2014 17:30

I was induced as my dd was large.. So born at 40 weeks my 'large' girl was 5lbs 9...

Cullercoats88 · 21/12/2014 17:40

I was told at my scan on Friday (34weeks exactly) that baby is 6lbs!!!

Ive looked online, and most moms have said how deceiving it can be, my bump is fairly small and I've only put on 2stone so far which I'm chuffed about, so find it hard to believe I have 6weeks left to go and already have a 6lb baby!!

If you are feeling well, and baby is happy then I wouldn't worry. These measurements can be wrong, I read up to 10% either way. I know that bump size often depends on your figure before pregnancy

Thanks guys, I have my scan appointment tomorrow morning, so not too long until I have a better idea of what is going on!

My 11lbs baby who was going to be a whopper was 6lbs 13oz and needed premature clothes that went up to 4lbs. He was long that was all

JennyBlueWren · 22/12/2014 18:02

A few weeks ago (28 weeks) my bump was measuring 4 weeks too big (so 32 weeks)!
Went for scan and it turned out baby was a week and a half too big but that's just within the 95th percentile so it's okay and baby is all in proportion.
Going back for another scan in the new year.

MaximumVolume · 22/12/2014 20:17

Wrapped DS1 was very long & scrawny when born, so this one maybe the same!

I'm really interested that so many people have this but then it's just wait-&-see anyway. I am not really sure what the criteria for action being taken are when they decide you are "too big"

WrappedInABlankie · 22/12/2014 20:30

I think if they're long and when we had them little lines with the diamond on to show the growth his legs where always at the top end or off it so I assume the longer they are the more they have to fold so makes you measure bigger.

My friend has the opposite of her baby was breach but they always told her he was going to be small like 6cms behind till one day she measured the way he was lying and he was bang on target she had forgotten to do it that way for months Hmm

madeuplovesong44 · 22/12/2014 20:31

I'm 33 weeks with twins so it's a bit different but just to illustrate the inaccuracies of bump measuring.....I have a growth scan every two weeks showing that both twins are following the 50th centiles nicely. The midwives often measure my bump just for a laugh. At 30 weeks it was 40cm and now at 33 today she recorded it at 34?? Don't think I look massive for twins but surely I haven't shrunk. They aren't concerned at all. Good luck with your scan, hope it will be fine x

MaximumVolume · 23/12/2014 10:07

Yep, just had my scan and as suspected, femur length at the top of the scale, so another tall baby! All fine otherwise. Just waiting for it to be checked by a doctor before going home with the all-clear.

ask them about possibilities of gestational diabetes, some people develop it in later stages of pregnancy even after that glucose test that actually not routine in all trusts. Ask them to double check just to make sure.
I suspect I had this and was always measuring way over for my personal chart but they kept saying it was all fine and not too worry that I still "look" fine. I requested a sweep at 40 weeks and had baby soon after, he was huge, 2 pounds bigger than my first daughter, got stuck on the way out and had low sugar right after his birth. I have multiple issues now with separated abdominal muscles, hernia and prolapse. They never agreed that I had unsuspected GD but they never denied either. My trust did not offer glucose test to me.

FlankShaftMcWap · 23/12/2014 11:27

I was scanned before being induced at 34 weeks with DS2 and he measured 39 weeks. He was born the next morning at 6lb 4oz which was pretty good for 34 weeks! He lost nearly a lb in scbu but the nurses remained impressed by his size Grin
My dates were definitely correct as DH was working offshore at the time and DS was conceived in a narrow window of one week so he was just a big boy. I was induced for cholestasis so my bloods were pretty thoroughly checked and no signs of GD either. I dread to think what size he would have been at full term!

MaximumVolume · 23/12/2014 11:48

Thanks babynelly estimated weight at this point is 2.5kg (I think that's about 5 and a half pounds) so not massive by any means. There doesn't seem to be any concern over GD and have not ordered any tests for it. Next MW appointment is 6th Jan, so I will double-check with her then.

Flank wow! He would have been over 9lb, I guess, if he had been born at term!

FlankShaftMcWap · 23/12/2014 19:30

I think I might have struggled with that Grin
Hope all goes well for you Maximum Flowers

So it turned out I had another 8 weeks to go when I started this thread! Baby was born at 41+6, the day before I was going in for induction.

Despite being a reasonably hefty 9lb2, all went well. He's now 6 weeks old and coming up for 13lb!

Thanks! I always wonder how these things end, so I thought I'd come back & update in case any in a similar position Googles & finds it!
