Bad news at 20 weeks scan

Hi, it's my first time posting on here, I am desperate for some info. I went for my 20 week scan on Friday and was told that my baby girl had fluid on the back of her neck, I was told to wait and the consultant would scan me, whilst I was waiting I got took in to what I can only describe as a bereavement room, where a midwife came in and said I know you have been told some devastating news today, which I was confused at as I hadn't been told anything, a couple of minutes later I got took into another scan room to be scanned off the consultant where I was then told my baby had fluid from ear to ear and also on her lungs and also around her heart I was told that her heart wasn't the correct shape as it was round and the consultant would have expected it to be longer and also that the walls looked thicker than she would expect. I was giving a appointment for Monday (tomorrow) with a top foetus heart consultant for a echo scan and then another appointment on Tuesday for a amniocentesis. It has been the longest 2 days of my life and I am finding it very hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel. If anyone has any info or has been through a similar thing please reply. Thanks

I don't have any experience in this steph but I will be praying you get good news tomorrow.. Will be thinking of you x

blackwidow74 · 14/12/2014 20:50

Everything crossed for you tomorrow ... don't give up hope and don't be railroaded into any decisions until you are totally sure of what you are facing. My sister was supposed to be terminated due to severe disabilities and abnormalities ... my parents continued with the pregnancy anyway and she was born perfectly healthy! Have someone accompany you aside from partner ... so that they too can take info on board that you may both miss and write everything down! Best of luck to you and I will be praying for better news!

Swanny84 · 14/12/2014 21:59

Sorry I have no advice, just wanted to send you my love...I pray for more positive news for you and your baby. Must be so awful I can't imagine. Xxx

Blessedandgrateful · 14/12/2014 22:04

Thinking of you - please know that you will get through this. Get plenty of hugs and do and be whoever you need to be to get through this.

All the best for today Steph, really thinking of you and praying everything is ok xx

Stephw9lso · 15/12/2014 13:06

Thanks fr your mgs. Been to see doc for echo and was told everything is fine got a 90% that her heart is fine he said he never gives anyone 100% as you can never be 100% sure so he only ever gives people a 90%. I am happy with the outcome but still a long way to go yet. Thanks again for all your lovely mgs xx

ChatEnOeuf · 15/12/2014 13:42

Great news - presuming you'll be having lots of scans now to see what happens to all the fluid?

Glad it is good news after what I imagine must have been a long and horrible weekend. Grin

Swanny84 · 15/12/2014 15:46

Brill news, fingers crossed they keep an extra close eye on you xxx

TheScenicRoute · 15/12/2014 22:50

Congratulations Steph, in the 29 weeks that I've been lurking in these forums I have only seen you and one other person go through this, and both of you had very worrying scares that turned out to be OK in the end. It makes my heart drop to read these scares. I'm so glad that everything appears fine so far. Fingers crossed for all the other ladies out there that it is a very long time before another nasty scare happens. Good luck. X

Tranquilitybaby · 15/12/2014 22:53

So pleased it was much better news than you feared. Onwards and upwards x

Stephw9lso · 16/12/2014 18:51

Hi everyone just thought I would pop on here and update as been back for amnio today, and I can't believe what I was told the baby's lungs are now completely clear of fluid the consultant couldn't believe it either since Friday all the fluid has gone. We aren't out the woods yet as still need amnio results (get them friday) and scan on the 31st to make sure sure her lungs are still clear and to check the back of her neck. I'm so confused I k ow I should be over the moon but I am scared to

steph it's sounding positive so far, I know it must be so hard at the moment, but you sound like you have a little fighter in there.. I will keep everything crossed for you x

BumWad · 16/12/2014 21:05

Steph that is really great news so far. Hope the amnio results come back ok for you Flowers

I would not rush to make any decisions based on ultrasound results. It is now known that 40% of scans give inaccurate results which include false positive and false negative results. Research has also shown that many problems which are picked up early on naturally resolve themselves. ultrasounds themselves can cause problems although more research is needed. It is worth noting that there has been not a single study on the safety of ultrasounds and animal studies have shown the problems they can cause. Nice guidelines also recommend scans if medically needed and not to have to many. Nature will take its course and i believe whats meant to be will be. Waiting is hard. It is a scary time for you and i wish you well. I will be thinking of you.

"It is worth noting that there has been not a single study on the safety of ultrasounds and animal studies have shown the problems they can cause."

This is nonsense and scaremongering.

There have been a great number of studies on the safety of ultrasound in pregnancy.

At worst, increased numbers of ultrasounds in pregnancy may contribute to a higher rate of lefthandedness!

www.spitalmures.ro/_files/protocoale_terapeutice/ginecologie/160e-cpg-june2005.pdf (the references list a good number of studies into the safety of ultrasound)

Hi everyone, could anyone give me an update? I know it’s been a few years but I had my 20 week scan on Friday and I’m awaiting referral now 😓 same problem, potential englarged pulmonary artery but was told it could be due to positioning. My scan notes said this ‘Technically very difficult examination with challenging views of the fetal heart.
In the 3VV the PA appears wider than the aorta with 3VT not clearly demonstrated. LVOT not clearly demonstrated.
Referral to Fetal Medicine (FM) made and form sent’
