DVT

Hi,
Has anyone had a DVT while pregnant? The hospital think I may have one. Spent most of yesterday afternoon in walk in centre then A&E. Had the blood test done that supposedly tells you if you have a clot or not. It came back positive but the doctor said that in pregnant women the test nearly always comes back + if you have a clot or not. I am having a scan this afternoon which will hopefully be conclusive one way or the other. The doctor told me they can treat me for the clot but it can cause miscarriage. I've already had 2 miscarriages and the threat of having treatment which could cause one is freaking me out. I'd love to hear from anyone else who has had a DVT or a midwife with some advice. Thanks.
Sue

i injected into the outer thigh - TBH i bruised anyway - it thins the blood so you will probably bruise wherever you do it (sorry about that) ... good news is as soon as you stop injecting the bruising goes really fast ...

Charleesunnysunsun · 12/10/2006 17:43

What i do as i can;t bare to do it in my stomach is find the fatty bit on the front of my thigh (betwwn my knee and hip and squeeze it and inject there i find sometimes i get the needle in without feeling it at all but sometimes it stings a bit depending where you doit. You can also do it in your bottom again anywhere you can grab a bit of fatty tissue, not so easy if your thin luckily im not so much!

I do mine myself as dp has a needle phobia and it's becme second nature to me to go up to bed so the jab, put it in the sharps box and that's it done.

taylormama · 12/10/2006 17:44

you will get an absolute pro at injecting too - it became part of my daily routine - get up, have shower, brush teeth and inject!!

Thanks everyone for your help. Did any of you see anyone at a clinic about your DVT's. I was told that there was a clinic for pregnant women only who have DVT's. So far I've been treated at my local hospital which I dislike intensely but I have my booking visit at Queen Charlottes next Friday and I'm hoping that they can take over my care for the DVT aswell.

Dont rub it afterwards it will make it bruise more also make sure you squeeze your skin the whole time which also stops it bruising so much.

I go onto warfrin for 8 weeks after baby's born which can be a pain as i have to have twice weekly blood tests to get the level right or i can choose to stay on Clexane if i don;t mind injecting.

I got tested for everything and they came back all clear, it turns out i just have incredibley thick blood. I used to have to wear the stockings in bed i found them tre uncomfortable!

peacemakerukuk · 12/10/2006 17:50

Thanks Charleesunnysunsun , thats exactly what the nurse told us today. I've no idea why I got this clot either, I have no risk factors at all so its all a bit weird. I've had 2 normalish pregnancies before this one and nothing like this has ever happened to me before.

I continued with the injections after pregnancy, thougth warfarin was a problem with bf, but may be wrong about that. I bruised where ever I injected to be honest, but you do get used to it, and the more skilled you are the better. My dh volunteered to it, but the suspense as he tried to pluck up courage put me off tbh
If you can bear the stockings they will help too, but they can make you feel even more miserable in pregnancy, I didn't always, but didn't have a dvt, but was thougth to be at a higher risk of having them
One last thing, I felt the cold more when I was on them, as it thins your blood. Also bleed a little bit more. Just things to be aware of.

peacemakerukuk · 12/10/2006 18:41

Thanks for that Overrun, you've answered a question for me there, I've been feeling very cold today and you've now told me why - thanks, I thought I was going mad I will definately ask about the stockings when I go to the hospital next week. Thanks again.

Definalty don't rub. screamed at a midwife who trid to when I was pg . The thinking used to be that warfarin went through breast milk (they did when my friend had one 5 years ago) but they have done loads of test and they have concluded that it doesn't come out in breast milk at all. Absolutly can't take when you are pg as it does cross the placenta (I think that is why they thought it would come through breast milk) so that is why you have to have low molecular weight herparin.

taylormama · 13/10/2006 09:28

hi - i breastfed whilst on warfarin - no probs with that at all. Also if you have any dental treatment or anything that may make you bleed more tell the person treating you ... also and i don't want to freak anyone out you should discuss whether you will be allowed an epidural whilst on heparin/clexane as some consultants don't want to give it ... not sure of the reason why. Please don't be alarmed or upset by this - i only found out when my MW mentioned it in passing when i was 30 weeks pg.

Hi everyone,
Two more questions for you:

  1. Did you find that for no apparent reason you can have 1 day when the injection doesn't hurt much at all and another day when it hurt like hell?
  2. For those of you who had leg pain as one of your symptoms - how long did it take for the pain to go once you were on the injections? Its been 4 days for me know and my leg has only eased very slightly. Thanks again for all your help so far.

I think it took weeks rather than days for the pain to subside - I had a big clot in the top of my leg. Even now, (8 years later) I get pain in my leg sometimes.

I found the pain varied each day. it depends on where you inject (if you accidentally get an old site, it is agony), and how effective you were at pinching. I found it less painful to roll a bit of skin between my thumb and third finger of one hand, and inject at an angle with the other. By the end of week 2 you will be finding it much easier!

I remember with each pregnancy counting down the weeks left of injecting, rather than the weeks of pregnancy left - so I sympathise, it is a horrible experience.

taylormama · 15/10/2006 09:02

honestly, with my first clot it took about 6 weeks for the pain to be gone and then i wore stockings all the time and that really helped. Second clot about 3 - 4 weeks. You will feel better soon and the more you can elevate your legs and rest the better it will feel. xxxx

peacemakerukuk · 15/10/2006 17:11

Thanks again guys, its great being able to use your experiences, I don't feel so alone in all this I wasn't given any but I will definately ask about them at my booking in visit next Friday at Queen Charlottes.

Don't know if anyone is still around but just thought I'd bring you all up to date. I had my first appointment with the doctor at the hospital last week and unfortunately have put up the amount of Clexane I'm on up to 160mg from 135 split into 2 injections a day of 80mg As you can imagine I was not a happy bunny when she told me that. She said I'd stay on the injections until 6 weeks after the baby was born. I have to go back next Tuesday for some clotting blood tests and then the Friday in 2 weeks time to see a haematologist who will look at the results of those tests.
I tried injecting in the front of my thigh as a change to my stomach but it hurt like blazes from the moment the needle went in and for a few hours after so I won't be doing that again. Thats me and my news. On the plus side, we got a very brief dating scan and everything is looking good We have a nuchal scan booked for 10th November which fingers crossed will also go well.
Sorry to be so long
Sue
