I have terrible indigestion and have found some Gaviscon double action tablets in the cupboard. I can't find the information leaflet though. Are they safe to take?

Pregnant women can get Gaviscon on prescription. I keep mine on the nightstand!

weegiemum · 09/12/2014 17:38

I used to get a prescription for 2L of gaviscon a fortnight when I was pg with dd1. Slugged it out of the bottle!

scarletforya · 09/12/2014 17:39

By the end I was swinging it straight from the bottle!

Yes, it's safe!

KatoPotato · 09/12/2014 17:39

Oh yes, drank from the bottle as standard!

KatoPotato · 09/12/2014 17:40

And you can get sachets for your handbag!

scarletforya · 09/12/2014 17:40

Swigging, not swinging!

thesmallbear · 09/12/2014 17:43

The tablets are just as safe as the liquid?

Yes tablets are just as safe a liquid.

thesmallbear · 09/12/2014 17:52

Thanks all Smile

Absolutely safe. My obstetrician used to open his meds cupboard and tell me to help myself to as much Gaviscon as I wanted with my last DS. Still have some in stock now Grin

ChickenMe · 09/12/2014 18:06

I hope so because I've been drinking it!

SomeSunnySunday · 09/12/2014 18:08

Oh lord yes. I am drinking a bottle a week Grin.

SomeSunnySunday · 09/12/2014 18:09

Ps tablets are fine, but the liquid is more effective (for me, anyway).

RedundantExpat · 09/12/2014 18:10

I drank the italian equivalent of Citrosodina - a godsent.

DrSeuss · 09/12/2014 18:11

Practically lived on it through two pregnancies! Of course, they both came out bright pink with a liking for fireman but it was worth it!

AppleYumYum · 09/12/2014 18:13

Oh gosh I was another swigging from the bottle constantly with both my pregnancies, towards the end I drank more than I ate! Now get the Gaviscon Advance though on prescription, it's much thicker and works for longer and quickly.

CurlsLDN · 09/12/2014 18:14

Absolutely, but I recommend the chewable tums pastilles instead when you can get to the supermarket, much more palatable!

stargirl1701 · 09/12/2014 18:33

And, if it doesn't work, get your GP to prescribe Zantac (Ranitidine).

BananaToast · 09/12/2014 18:41

Those of you who survived pregnancy swigging Gaviscon, at what point did you start needing it? I'm 21 weeks and fine as yet but imagine heartburn tends to start later than this.

Pico2 · 09/12/2014 19:00

I've been prescribed ranatidine and it is way better than gaviscon. Though I was having to drink gaviscon in the middle of the night and also throwing up in the middle of the night, so perhaps a bit of an extreme case.

JennyBlueWren · 09/12/2014 19:09

I think I started having it badly at about 14 weeks and it's got worse since then (29 weeks now)! I buy big bottles and top up the little ones from it. It's actually easier to drink it from the bottle than use a spoon -I just spill it down my front!

NoNoNoooooo · 09/12/2014 19:19

And if Zantac doesn't work get your GP to prescribe omaperazole, you don't have to put up with it

ffallada · 09/12/2014 23:31

bananas - I can't speak for other people but when I hit the third trimester I started carrying gaviscon everywhere, swigging it from the bottle like a junkie drinking methadone! I probably could have used it earlier but didn't realise the sick feeling was heartburn/indigestion! It makes life good again, I couldn't live without it.
acid reflux is a different thing again, if you have that then i second nononoooo's suggestion of omaprazol.
DrSeuss Xmas Grin

Yes to gaviscon in any form.
But if you suffer a lot, omeprazole is the way to go without hesitation. It changed my life from my stomach trying to digest itself to absolutely no pain or discomfort at all in a matter of 24hrs. Threaten your GP if (s)he resists prescribing it, you don't have to suffer!
