In case of liver, the risk is overdose of vitamin A, not iron. In case of rare steak, it's toxoplasmosis, not food poisoning. And yes, pates carry a listeria risk. The ones that have been heat treated/pasteurised are ok though.

Oh yeah I've heard that bit too, pate is just the nightmare food isn't it! :D Well the one I'll be eating is made at home by my mother right in front of me, and is just chicken livers, onions, butter and deliciousness, so nobody is keeping me away from a helping of that. I don't eat store bought pate anyway so can't comment on that.

Sorry I'm tired, I know it's Vitamin A, I meant overdosing on liver as opposed to Iron, which I don't think can happen from 1 serving. Again with the toxo from pate, I know the liver will be cooked sufficiently at home but still, one serving, I'll take the risk.

I craved seafood and tuna is both pg. ate loads of prawn sandwhiches and crayfish and rocket sandwhiches. And seafood lasagna. Since I had hyperemisis for nearly 5 months I reckoned that eating any food was an advantage.

The things I'm avoiding are the things that can cross the placenta and damage the baby. So that means:

Toxoplasmosis: I am avoiding rare meat. I am eating cured meat though as the risk is much much lower.

Listeria: I am avoiding unpasteurised soft cheese, and all mould ripened cheese whether pasteurised or not. Unpasteurised hard cheese is ok, conversely pasteurised mould cheeses (eg pasteurised Brie or chevre) are not ok. It's all to do with when listeria is most likely to grow. Also avoiding pate and buffet salads as those carry quite high listeria risk.

Sushi: I'm not sure whether the parasites in raw fish can cross the placenta, but am avoiding anyway since I'm not too bothered about sushi.

Alcohol: limited, maybe 1 unit a week since second trimester.

Caffeine: limited eg 1 coffee or 2 teas a day.

Eggs: I am eating runny eggs since 1) they are lion stamped so barely any risk of salmonella and 2) salmonella doesn't cross the placenta.

Liver: I am avoiding in anything other than minute quantities.

Seafood: I am eating. Yum.

Everyone must make up their own mind on the risks they are willing to take but it's sensible to understand why things are risky before you do that.

All sushi fish in EU should be frozen, which would kill parasites. I think there's an exception for certain salmon though in the UK.

minipie · 05/12/2014 20:53

Hazelnutt I thought that, but then saw itsu's website which proudly announces all fish is unfrozen...
