Sickness and toothbrushing

I saw the Dentist this week and he gave me a piece of advice that I?d not heard and I thought I?d share with you.

He said that if you suffer from sickness you should be careful not to brush your teeth straight after being sick but to wait 20 minutes or so. This was because brushing immediately could brush stomach acid into the teeth and damage the enamel. Instead, he suggested rinsing with plenty of water and chewing on toothpaste.

Thought I?d pass it on?

Another tip! I usually keep a bottle of mouthwash near to the loo to rinse the acky taste out of my mouth!

brushing my teeth makes me feel sick!
Wonder what the dentist would say to that?

PrettyCandles · 09/10/2006 20:59

Very true.

Brushing my teeth makes me retch in the first trimester. The worst thing is the sensation of the foaming toothpaste, but I've found that Dentyl toothpaste doesn't foam as much as most others, and I can just about tolerate it except right at the back on my molars.

My dentist suggested chewing sugar-free gum with Xylitol after every time I ate something and in-between times as well.

top tip, PC, will replace my colgate tomorrow.

It's also worse in the am, so I would just chew gum after breakfast, and brush my teeth a couple of hours later.

BudaBeast · 09/10/2006 21:16

Oh God I remember the brushing teeth/retching/choking days of being PG. Never thought to use gum though (that makes me ill too!).

scaryboobs · 09/10/2006 21:55

Ooh yes, it's NASTY isn't it! Had that with both of my pregnancies, in fact, I've only ever been sick after brushing my teeth, never at other times! I found that concentrating on breathing deeply through my nose just about got me through it (random I know, but it helped!) Even more randomly, not looking down the plughole also helped (I know how mad that sounds, but hey, it was the hormones!!)

I am 21 weeks now and still am sick every time I brush my teeth....I have to brush them while in the shower now too....cos I have taken to weeing myself at the same time too!!!

"Mums nearly finished in the bathroom..as I just heard her being sick!"

Great!! Dont you just love it!

Whoowhoobewhooooooh · 10/10/2006 12:08

Ahhh, the joys of the first trimester.

I'm 19 weeks with my first, and from 6 weeks to 17 weeks, I could not brush my teeth without immediately being sick.

At all.

Gum made me throw up too.

I'm a teacher and it was the summer holidays, so I just didn't go out.

Dreading my next dentist visit...

I am almost 24 weeks and still feeling a bit nauseous, usually when tired. And it is still the toothbrushing that makes me feel worse. A few weeks ago I would stand there for ages before putting the brush in my mouth willing myself not to throw up - also did the breathing through the nose thing. The gum idea is a good one - and Dentyl. I couldn't use Sensodine either and am only just getting back to it - in the meanwhile my sensitive teeth scream with anything sugary! My dentist told me to use mouthwash during pregnancy as an extra but that has sat on the shelf because that made me really sick ? Sorry, didn't want to share my woes, I am just glad to hear I am not alone ...
