Just thought I start a thread on this subject. I had this with both my dd and ds and I am interested to know how many other mums have had this? Also how did affect you and your child and do any of you know the lastest research on this i.e what causing pre-eclampsia? larsxx

I had pre-eclampsia - had to be induced at 37 weeks. I had high blood pressure for months and months afterwards and it is still at the high end of the normal range now - 20 months later. Not sure if it affected ds - but think the fact that he was early did influence the difficulties he had just after birth and were at least part of the cause of the reason he was in special care

Popsycal just read your posting. I had a section with DD and a section with DS. DD wa born 36wks and DS at 38wks they both didn't need special care. Although they were very small babies they were very strong. Larsxx

I had raised BP and protein in my Urine in the last 2 wks of pregnancy. I was admitted to hospital, but I don't think it ever turned out to be pre-eclampsia.... just pre pre-eclampsia!

My friend developed it at 34wks. Blood tests showed a lowered kidney and liver function and the baby was in distress. She had an emergency C section the next day. Both mum and baby were fine after that.

I think pre-eclampsia is still a bit of a mystery.

I had a section at 37 weeks once pre-eclampsia was diagnosed for sure after weeks of humming and haaing and about 2 months after I'd swollen to the size of a house - it wasn't until my second pregnancy that I realised just how much it had affected me first time round.
as well as physical symptoms, in my first pregnancy I was a real mess mentally the last month or so - really unable to concentrate, couldn't think straight etc - second time round wasn't like that at all - I haven't read of that as a symptom but was anyone else like that?
ds spent a night in scbu but was fine afterwards - now 18 months old and seems fine - but we had trouble establishing breastfeeding and all he did was sleep for the first month, also he had constant thrush, maybe cos his immune system was a bit knackered at the time?

I had p-eclampsia and was induced at 35 weeks. DS was in SCBU for a week but was allowed to leave hosp before me (though he didnt!) Had v high BP and protein in urine etc etc and felt lousy. Although he was induced I gave birth naturally and he was whisked away for the night. I had to have an epidural because of the BP. The catheter was removed and I was put to bed. 3 hours after giving birth, 2 nurses rushed into my room and started trying to reattach the catheter because my blood tests were very abnormal and they were worried that I was about to have kidney failure!! The pain was indescribable AS THEY COULDNT FIND THE HOLE TO REATTACH IT!!!!!!! ARRRGH!!!! That hurt more than anything else!!

Am now 10 weeks PG and the dr has said she will keep an extra eye on me taking BP every 2 weeks. I have to watch my weight and salt intake this time.

Am interested if anyone had a normal birth after PE the first time.

I had pre-eclampsia with dd2 and she went to SCBU, thankfully only for a couple of days. I couldn't breastfeed her, and wondered (and still wonder) if that could have had anything to do with it. The worst bit was, having given birth, my immediate thoughts were 'great, now I can finally get out of this godforsaken place' -only to be told I had to stay for a further five days for 'observation'. That hurt!

popsycal · 18/04/2004 14:00

i was in hospital a week before being induced then for 2 weeks after due to ds being poorly and my bp being sky high

carla · 18/04/2004 14:44

Poor you Pops - at least at the time I consoled myself by the fact that some of the mums-to-be had been there for months, and months, and months.

zippy539 · 18/04/2004 19:18

I developed pre-eclampsia late on in my first pregnancy - only actually got protein once but high bp, swollen beyond recognition and dodgy platelets, kidneys etc. Because it was so late DS was delivered by crash c-section on his due date after a failed induction and extreme foetal distress. In the end he was fine, though we were told he was v v lucky - part of the problem was that no one was taking it very seriously because of the no protein business and all the time DS was getting worse . I was on medication for BP for nearly six months after that. With dd I was completely paranoid - was monitored for BP every couple of weeks - again it went up at the end , dodgy bloods etc and my planned c-section was brought forward to 38 weeks. I know I got off lightly both times.

Thanks for all your postings on the subject. I was in hospital for over a month with DD. Second time round I got it again with ds but not as bad as the first time. I really hope they find out what causes it. I did read an article by a consultant Mr Harrington at the Homerton Hospital in Hackney East london, that it may be caused through poor circulation. I know DD did stop growing due to pre eclampsia. I don't know if anyone else has heard this about a poor circulation ? Larsxx

Didnt they think it could help to use Epsom Salts or something simple like that to help with Pre-E? I am sure I read that somewhere.

Hi all I have never had pre eclampsia however due to last pregnancy ( having spent 8 weeks in hospital) I have had to have doppler scans for this pregnancy, I was told that my left hand uterine artery was notching, which should be nothing to worry aboutas they are not sure what one side notching does!! however..... when both sides are notching apparantly it can be a sign the pre eclampsia is going to set in and IUGR.
HTH.

Take care all

My friend had it with her dd1. She went to her normal antnatal appointment and mentioned that baby hadn't been moving as much that day and she had a headache. When they checked her it was bad and she was rushed to theatre staraight away. Her dd was 10 weeks early and was in special care. My friend was in intensive care for 3 days unconcouis and she had several fits.
Glad to say both are fine now, and she never had it at all with her next pregnancy.
