India whilst pregnant

We had been hoping to spend Christmas in India but just before we booked we found out I was pregnant. I will be 17 weeks during Christmas week. I have read that I should avoid India as it is a malarial country. Does anyone have experience of travelling to an exciting country with the bump? We really wanted to make this a memorable pre-baby holiday but are stumped as to where to go that's sunny, outside Europe and safe in terms of malaria!

Thailand? I don't remember taking anti-malarials there, the coast at least should be fine. Have to say though, I wouldn't really want to be anywhere too remote in pregnancy, you may find something comes up for which you need reassurance. Hope you find somewhere

I wouldn't be happy at going the India while pregnant. I'd be too worried about tummy bugs, tropical illnesses etc, and needing medical care. Would you be able to get insurance? Apart from that, many women don't feel well enough to go that far away while pregnant (I still had morning sickness at 17 weeks).

dh travels to india with work and needed every vaccination going, including rabies. half of them you couldnt have whilst pregnant. dont think it is worth the risk tbh. how about loverly singapore. no vaccines needed.

I wouldn't recommend India whilst pregnant either - malaria risk plus other required vaccinations. How about South Africa, more specifically the south - Cape Town? You do need malaria cover for Kruger but if you stayed around CT, you would have lovely scenery and fab sunny weather. I think you could probably get away without any other vaccinations as well. Not too hideous a length of flight either. You would also be able to get easy access to English speaking medical facilities - although check out your travel insurance situation carefully, make sure they know you are pregnant when you take it out.

Hi Hun,
I've been to India 4 times & to be honest wouldn't recomend it whilst pregnant! Its a gorgeous place but will be extremely hot & the medical care depending on where you go can be basic to say the least. Also 10/12 hour flights are not that comfortable! Why don't you try somewhere nearer to home like the canaries whilst pregnant & save India till after. Took my daughter to India for the 1st time when she was just over a year & she has never been ill over there.

What about something very different - like the Scandinavian countries? Or Iceland? Not hot, but you may find that you can't tolerate the sun while pregnant anyway.

Ooooh reading this thread has made me want a holiday!!! Spent a month in australia in the summer & was planning to go to Rome in Feb but have discovered what I thought was jet lag is really pregnancy!! lol So my partner says I'm gonna have to make do with a weekend in the lake district till after its born! Sure I can talk him round to a short break on the continent tho!lol

gillian1973 · 07/10/2006 19:11

Thanks all, at least you are confirming my worries so that's it, India is out. I haven't seen the midwife yet so I had no-one to ask and the doctor looked at me rather blankly!

We are considering Morocco now. I have been lucky up to now with no sickness so fingers crossed it lasts.

Caiti, if you cannot convince you partner on a trip to Rome I would highly recommend the 'Drunken Duck' in the Lake District.

I wouldn't fly at all whilst pregnant.

Just my opinion.

I went to South Africa when pregnant with DS1 (about 23 weeks) and had a wonderful trip. As well as Cape Town, the winelands (guess who was driving) and the garden route we went to a non-malarial game park near the Botswanan border. I would definitely recommend a memorable pre-baby holiday wherever you go - it'll probably be your last chance to really relax on holiday for some time. Regarding short breaks we went to Venice when I was around 8 weeks pregnant with DS1 and Rome when around 8 weeks pregnant with DS2, both wedding anniversary trips booked before I found out I was pregnant. Loved it despite the sickness.

bettythebuilder · 07/10/2006 19:42

really, ooogs? Why not? (just being nosey...)

oooggs · 08/10/2006 18:25

bettythebuilder - I have been very poorly with both my pregnancys and that getting pregnant has always been long drawn out that I wouldn't do anything to jeapodise it.

I know plenty of people who have flown and been fine, but I am super cautious.

bettythebuilder · 08/10/2006 19:33

Oh, I see what you mean.
Yes, if I'd had problems during pregnancy I probably wouldn't have flow outside the UK, although I don't believe that flying while pg has any adverse effects (apart from more flatulence than normal )

oooggs · 08/10/2006 19:35

have nothing against others flying though.
