Hmm am not sold on wraps, as they look faffy and quite hot!

I will try my local sling library.....

Re the Ergo, is there any reason why you wouldn't use it for a newborn, as lots of people are saying they'd wait till DC was older?

Tbh we don't have oodles of cash and is been hoping to buy one sling and have done, hence the Ergo as it says newborn to toddler....

Well, I think the Ergo needs a separate purchase of an insert for newborns.

But basically it's that a lot of newborns don't like the 'exposed and strapped on' feeling from either a Bjorn or a Soft Sctructured Carrier (like the Ergo). They like to be all snuggled in. A wrap even lets you load them in in the foetal position to start with.

Don't know about the Ergo, but the Manduca DS screamed when put in when tiny.

Wraps really aren't faffy, but fair enough if it's not your thing. If you want to try, some sling libraries hire and they are (unlike Ergos) pretty safe to pick up on ebay.

No, wraps are not faffy and really secure - my wrap was the only carrier for a newborn that I felt confident in being truly hands-free with.

The Ergo is too large for a newborn for starters and also just not secure/snuggly enough. The newborn insert makes is suitable but IMO not as good as a stretchy wrap.

I have a friend who made her own wrap from a length of jersey material she bought from John Lewis and there are plenty of videos on YouTube showing people improving wraps from table clothes or bed sheets Grin.

Honestly wraps are not faffy, they can look quite daunting but once you have done it a few times they are fine. You can put a wrap on and leave it on all day just taking baby in and out as you need.

I leant my sister my Moby wrap and just showed her how to tie it once.

There are lots if videos on YouTube and groups on Fb where you can get tips and at a sling meet they will show you how to use them.

I agree re Moby or woven wraps being the most comfortable and secure with a newborn.

You can get loads of advice here. And buy a cheap wrap/ sell one that doesn't work for you

I used a boba 4g from birth with no problems. I bought a wrap for around the house but I do find it a bit of a faff and not any comfier than the carrier.

I've bought the Manduca - not had a chance to try it yet as DD hasn't arrived yet.

I also got a libertly sling but couldn't get the hang off it but will probably give it another try as it's less bulky for wearing around the house while the Manduca is more for when we are out walking the dog etc.

I recommend the baby k'tan carrier. it's like the moby, but is less fabric and you don't need to wrap it. it's very easy to use. i love mine.

I loved my wilkinet for when they were tiny - stretchy wraps never felt secure. Woven wraps and ergo when bigger - someone gave us an ergo and I prefer it to my wrap now because you can put it on outside without the tails dragging on the floor.

Please don't use a stretchy type wrap for back carries, it's really not safe! See the video.

Having used slings extensively for both mine, all I can say is that different slings work for different people. And that includes the baby! DD1 loved being wrapped, and that's all I ever used for her. With DD2 I first used a Moby, then a mei tai, then a woven wrap for back carries. She hates being in a wrap though, too confining. After some trial and error we've finally figured out that she likes the manduca.

So there's a good chance you'll have to try a variety of slings before you find the ideal one for you and your baby. Sling libraries and sling meets can be really helpful with that. What sling you want can also change over time. The good news is that slings have excellent resale value. I've bought most of the carriers I've used second hand via Facebook. Most I then sold on for the same I paid for it, so losing only a bit of money for postage.

DD2 is now a big 13 month old and I carry her for hours at a time still. 2.5 yo DD1goes in the buggy, don't drive so walk everywhere and it works great for us.

I used the Baby Bjorn Miracle baby carrier for my second and couldn't recommend it enough. When they get to a certain weight it carries their weight on your hips as opposed to your shoulders. I used it to walk to town and back (30 min walk both ways) with no aches and pains at all.
