Have just eaten some very out of date food

I am 14 weeks pregnant and have just eaten two breakfast biscuits in work. As I swallowed the final crumbs, I noticed that the expiry date is 27 February 2013. 20 bloody months ago. Anyone food industry experts who can reassure me that I will be fine or do I need to try and "get rid" of them? Not a step I fancy taking. Am actually really panicking here...

They're biscuits. Not meat or dairy or some such. As long as they weren't mouldy, at best they'd be a bit stale. I should think you'll be fine.

Imnotaslimjim · 28/10/2014 12:02

Its a best before, not a use by. Which means they won't be at their best and may be stale. They won't be dangerous

It does make you wonder though, what's in them that they haven't gone stale enough for you to notice 20 months after their date!

That Trust Me I'm a Doctor programme or whatever its called did 'off' food recently. They said don't eat meat past its date but otherwise anything is fine, cut the mould off cheese, bread etc. Only thing to worry about was anything that was producing slime or mouldy nuts as they can make you ill.

RiverRocks · 28/10/2014 12:08

Biscuits are fine, they're 'best before' not 'use by'. The only thing that's affected, usually, is how they taste.

Don't panic!

SuperFlyHigh · 28/10/2014 12:08

You'll be fine.

the most you'll do is vomit/have the runs.

don't panic

Jackiebrambles · 28/10/2014 12:17

Please don't panic, you and baby will be absolutely fine!

Were they soft? If they didn't taste rank I'm very suprised!

Askance · 28/10/2014 12:21

Thank you all! They weren't even soft/soggy but were still completely crunchy. They tasted a bit like they had overdone the bicarbonate of soda but really nothing to alert me to the fact that they were well past the "best before" date. What on earth do they do to them to give them that type of longevity!

I ignore all these dates. I actually shop on a website called "approved foods" where you can get boxes of stuff that is out of date but perfectly safe to eat (cereal bars being one of those) Unless it's stinky, mouldy, or meat you'll be fine :)

JennyBlueWren · 28/10/2014 19:31

Biscuits are fine. Best Before is just a disclaimer for them not tasting as good, doesn't mean the same as Use By which is an order (although one I'm still flexible about).
My mum has to put Best Before dates on her honey -which is basically sugar and lasts forever (if kept sealed)!
They're pumped full of chemicals but must have good packaging to stay crunchy.

TheHermitCrab that website sounds very interesting, I'm going to check it out (post-pregnancy though as I have turned into a bit of a worrier during this pregnancy Smile ).

I actually had a hospital appointment this afternoon and the doctor was very reassuring about the biscuits he may have been laughing at me though

Thank you all again for your calming replies!
