Hi all, I am new here so sorry if this is all a bit garbled and crazy but I just found out this morning that I am pregnant.

On the off chance I did a test as my period is a couple of days late, not expecting to be PG at all as I only stopped taking the pill last month and was expecting a longer than usual time between periods but the little blue line was there immediately and the digital test confirms 2 - 3 weeks! We are completely overwhelmed and excited.

We were not trying per se, just stopped taking the pill and waited to see what happens but I just thought I would have more time - we tried once before and nothing for months!

I just feel completely unprepared - I have no plan of who to tell, whether to tell anyone at all, what to do if there is something wrong at 12 weeks, what if I MC before 12 weeks and no-one knows I was PG but I am a sobbing mess, how do I not tell people I am PG but get away with not drinking on nights out... GAH!!!

Can anyone recommend anything for us to read which might help us with some of these decisions? At the moment I feel pretty well but I guess if I have any sickness that will be a bit of a giveaway... I would just really appreciate the experience of people who have the experience! I want to tell my Mum but am waiting until after I have been to the doctor as she will be crazy excited (as she should be!) and I don't want her to be disappointed if it is a false alarm...

Thanks in advance...

Congratulations!! I have 4 DC, but was freaked out too the first time. It's natural. First of all, give yourself some time to get used to the idea. There is plenty of time for everyone else to be told and start giving advice, believe me!

I would start off by sorting out a GP appointment and getting your care set up. We waited until 12 weeks, or thereabouts, to tell anyone. If you want to tell your mum before, then do. Whatever makes you feel comfortable. Just be aware that people do have a tendency to want to spread the good news once it's out there ;-)

If you want something to read, I found "What to expect when you're expecting" a good book. It takes you through what happens to your body month by month, how you might be feeling, what tests to expect etc.

Thank you so much BellaVida - I am going to see my GP this week and I think I am going to order the book after that and get reading! I suppose I am kind of waiting for the GP to confirm, although I understand it is unlikely they will do another test as I already have two positive tests, one of them digital... I will probably do another few just to be sure ;-) thanks again!

Yes the GP probably won't be very reassuring I'm afraid! They will tell you to take folic acid (start that today if you can) and fill in a form to set up your MW care- they may ask you which hospital you want to go to if there's a choice in your area so it's worth having a think (and a google) about that!

Congratulations! I could have written this exact post in February! I'm currently waiting for baby to arrive (41 weeks today!).

I read loads on Mumsnet and later on went to NCT and a hospital based course. Kept me sane and helped me through the really dragged out periods of waiting between finding out and the 12 week scan.

We paid for a private scan at 8 weeks because I thought I would burst with the waiting and constant worrying. It was 100% worth it for me as it gave me something to focus on. It was amazing seeing the difference between that scan then the 12 and 20 week ones and because it was private, we got loads of photos and a DVD as a keepsake.

Be prepared for an anti-climax with the GP - I wasn't even allowed to see mine and just had to wait for the midwife booking in appt! Most people I know in rl who got a GP appt literally told them they were pg and were told congratulations, here is the number for the mw, Bye!

I told my best friend straight away as I needed to talk to someone! Then my mum, dad and sister the next day then work a couple of weeks later (due to sickness and upcoming appointments). Friends and colleagues after 12 week scan.

Yes don't expect the gp to do or confirm anything, they don't generally.

They will ask for the date of the first day of your last period, tell you what your due date will be and get you in the 'system' for midwife appointments etc.

Congratulations!

Thank you and congratulations to you all too!... I will be looking into the NCT and hospital based stuff and I have bought the book - it just feels so unreal - I can't believe it has happened so quickly! I think I need to settle and read my book (without the usual glass of something!) and try to absorb the enormity of it... I am now panicking that there may be something wrong but I guess everyone does that, right?

I have also just found out I'm pregnant. Tested negative on Monday at the doctors and tested positive today so it's not even sunk in yet!!!! This is my first too, I've rang the doctors and the midwife is ringing me tomorrow to book an appointment. I don't know what to expect either, feel excited, nervous, scared! I might purchase that book though thanks xxxxx Grin
