anterior placenta

hi all

after my scan yesterday, thre nurse told me I have an anterior placenta, ie my placenta is to the front rather than the back. She said it doesn't pose a problem as it is not low lying but that it could be the reason I haven't felt baby move yet.

had anyone else got an anterior placenta? when did you first feel baby moving and can you feel it regularly? I was looking forward to feeling baby kick so I'm a bit gutted it may not be as noticeable now.

I have a wrap-around placenta, which, I think, means it goes all the way round the sides but not over the cervix. I felt baby moving from 16 weeks and my husband felt it from 20. You haven't said how many weeks you are. I think high BMI is the thing that stops you feeling baby for a long time rather than placenta position.

Pastamancer · 28/10/2014 08:36

I had an anterior placenta with dd and didn't feel anything until about 22/23 weeks. This time round I have another anterior placenta and started feeling movement at 18 weeks.

MsRyanGosling · 28/10/2014 08:42

I had an anterior placenta with ds3, was around 20 weeks before I felt him. Was much earlier with ds2, approx 14-15w with a non anterior placenta.

BlinkAndMiss · 28/10/2014 08:45

I had an anterior with my DS and felt movement from about 16 weeks. I think it just made the movements duller and it wasn't as obvious from the outside. I was told anterior placenta makes a back to back labour more likely which was the case with me as the baby naturally lays facing the placenta. Back to back has the potential to be more painful but there is lots that can be done re. pain relief and management.

Grinningcat · 28/10/2014 08:47

I have a high anterior placenta, but I felt my first kicks at 17.5 weeks and DH felt his first at 20 weeks. However I have a low BMI and as all the movement has been over on the right side and low down, I think the placenta is over on the left front. It only now at 23 weeks am I feeling movement over on the left side.

scratchandsniff · 28/10/2014 08:48

I felt flutters at around 18 weeks but nothing again until 22 weeks, when it was much stronger

Lisad1975 · 28/10/2014 08:53

I have one too, think I felt flutters at 22 / 23 weeks but they got stronger!! Also in later stages I had movements to the sides especially when I laid down !

dameagatha · 28/10/2014 08:58

Anterior placentas with both DSes - felt them at around 19 weeks each (tho think DS2 appeared briefly at about 14). LOTS of movement from both babies after that, so don't worry!

dameagatha · 28/10/2014 09:01

PS - DS1 was breech so had EMCS; DS2 was back-to-back so labour & birth (natural) were painful (I was also lying down, on a fetal monitor the whole time), but I couldn't recommend the epidural more!

forgot to mention I'm 20 weeks now. Still don't think I've felt anything I was 100% certain was baby!

thanks for the replies, reassured me loads! just worried I wouldn't feel proper kicks and moving about, but I may just have to wait a few more weeks

High anterior here, first faint wriggle at 16/17 weeks. I've never had a problem feeling it since, but I think baby is quite low down.

A lady from yoga has an anterior placenta and hadn't felt anything by her 20 week scan either.

I think as there are different anterior positions it is affected by the positioning of the baby too.

babynelly2010 · 28/10/2014 11:33

i had anterior placenta with my second baby. felt kicks just a bit earlier than with the 1st but it was all sort of muffled. my baby also was back to back but later turned right before coming out.

Nuttynortherner · 28/10/2014 11:47

I'm the same, was really worried about not feeling any movement but felt reassured that there was a reason for it. I'm 23 weeks tomorrow and felt my first definite strong movement yesterday so I'm sure you'll feel something but may be in a week or two

Gudgyx · 28/10/2014 12:20

Yeah I have an anterior. MW didnt tell me, I just noticed on my notes! Not low lying though. I started feeling movements at 19 + 5. Now 21 weeks and shes going nuts all the time lol

Happilymarried155 · 28/10/2014 12:28

I have an anterior low lying placenta and feel loads of kicks, my tummy jumps around all over the place. I first felt big obvious kicks around 18 weeks and now there's no mistaking them :) x

FTRsGotAShinyNewNN · 28/10/2014 12:39

I had a posterior placenta with DS(5) and felt movements at around 18 weeks but he was pretty lazy all the way through and was never really active.
I'm now 27 weeks with DD and have an anterior placenta, I hardly felt any movement until 21-22 weeks, it now feels as if someone is doing karate in my tummy Grin

LuckyAugust · 28/10/2014 16:22

Hi there, I have a low anterior placenta and felt nothing until about 21-22 weeks (this is my third so familar with how baby movements feel). I'm now 25+1 and my little one has been on the go for the last 3 days!!. After being told by my midwife I may feel very little at all I'm thrilled that I can actually feel and see movements (and dh can feel him tooSmile ). Try not too worry, as your baby gets bigger you will feel something x

SeaSaltMill · 28/10/2014 16:53

I have a high anterior placenta and feel kicks no problems, apart from in one area. I'm 24 weeks tomorrow and have been feeling them strongly since about 21 weeks. DH felt the first one last week, but mainly because the baby stops whenever he puts his hand on my belly! I felt flutters from about 18 weeks.

jadeybaby87 · 28/10/2014 17:37

I have anterior placenta too I'm 22+4 and have just got little flutters on my left side

Littleturkish · 28/10/2014 17:44

I have anterior placenta, v low BMI (18 before falling pregnant) and only really this week (23 weeks) am I feeling movements akin to what I felt at 16/18 weeks with my first (posterior placenta) and have actually had some proper kicking through the stomach kicks that my DH felt for the first time last night.

I've had a very problematic pregnancy, so it is really lovely to have that reassurance now. I have friends who felt nothing virtually all the way through, though they are better covered than me, but not so much so that you would think it could contribute to it.

babynelly2010 · 28/10/2014 18:04

I also for got to mention the real positive of having anterior placenta, the sleep was great all the way to the end, could of been just me though... I could not sleep well with my first who was posterior.

Dogsmom · 28/10/2014 21:48

I also have an anterior placenta and felt her at 12 weeks which was much earlier than dd1 but maybe its because i knew what they felt like.

Am now 22 weeks and feel her around 15x a day, this week I can also feel her kicks with my hand and tonight have seen my bump move, I was worried at first that I wouldn't feel as much and am a worrier but there's been no difference to dd1.

catg83 · 29/10/2014 07:57

Me too. I am 38 weeks today and I don't get much kicks and movement in the centre of my huge belly. I get loads down either side, down low and up high. Just not much down the middle. x

Serafinaaa · 29/10/2014 08:03

I have an anterior placenta and could feel baby strongly from 20 weeks (bmi roughly 20 before pregnancy). The first few flutters at 19 weeks felt like little bubbles bursting and it took a week or so for them to get stronger and me to realise they were not related to digestion!
