It shocked me to see these young mums-to-be binge drinking, but to most people, that's an obvious no no. what was the most worrying was the woman who had drank moderately and had a child with sever fetal alcohol syndrome. and the doc that was advocating no drinking at all.

i didnt drink at all with my dd except a little in the first 2 weeks before i knew i was preg and the odd glass of wine in the last month. i am now 15 wks preg and have had the odd glass of wine on an eve 2-3 times a week. now worried i shouldnt have and don't want to touch another drop!

anyone else see this?

Terrifying...... but dd was born in January and has no problems at all. I drank about 3 glasses of Rose wine a week whilst I was pregnant, but god I would have not done it if I had been given the facts as presented last night.

ProfYaffle · 03/10/2006 08:22

Me too Egypt. I had one glass of wine per week with dd, I'm now 18 weeks pg again and have been drinking similar to you. The woman who claimed to drink moderately though, I did wonder how big her glasses of wine were (clutching at straws). I'm definately going back to one glass per week from now on.

Didn't see programme but I went right off alcohol when pregnant .. I'm sure I've read that a couple are not a problem though

egypt · 03/10/2006 08:28

worrying to see how a foetus became more active with just one drink and that this is the possible link to hyperactivity in children on the increase. didnt that doc guy say 'one drink could cause permanent defects'!?

Wish I'd go off it. I early pregnancy I actually had a craving for lager which I normally hate.

ProfYaffle · 03/10/2006 08:30

I know Egypt, that's the bit that really worried me.

I think it's all about balance. We don't know how much the 'moderate' drinker was really drinking. Also, every time I've had something sugary in this preg, baby has reacted crazily, so the fact of it reacting isn't so dramatic. I've had 2 halves of beer or equivalent roughly per week throughout preg, and I really don't think this level is harmful. In France women basically carry on drinking wine, albeit of course not binge drinking (a glass a day).

I've had people saying 'oh you shouldn't be having a cup of tea!' and think we have enough guilt as pregnant women; I think most of us can be trusted to be sensible and not down bottles of vodka or whatever, it's just another guilt trip..

did anyone see the thing in the US about every woman of childbearing age having to imagine she is 'pre pregnant' and not drink, smoke etc? some nutty doctor or other. It was quite interesting...

tessasmum · 03/10/2006 08:40

Didn't see it but sounds very scary stuff.

With DD I didn't know I was pg until 15 weeks (don't ask ) and during that time I celebrated my 40th birthday in a haze of strawberry margaritas! Found out I was pg the following weekend - major guilt trip but 3 1/2 years on I have one smart cookie on my hands.

Don't think they would make programmes about all of the millions of 'normal' pregnancies where we have a few drinks a week

egypt · 03/10/2006 08:41

yes, that puts it all into perspective i guess.

Fio, I did wonder whether the 'moderate' drinker woman was lying. I'd previously heard that it took about a bottle of wine per night to produce FAS (can't remember where I got that from though)

ScareyCaligulaCorday · 03/10/2006 09:45

FAS isn't just the amount of alcohol you drink, there's very strong evidence that there is also a genetic component to whether you get it or not.

Which explains why some women can drink half a bottle of gin a day and still have normal children, while others may only have a dry sherry at christmas and end up with a damaged child (OK I exagerate but ykwim)

Agree with Fio - alcoholics lie about their intake and if the woman on the prog wasn't lying, then possibly she had that genetic factor which swung it.

incy · 03/10/2006 10:12

Good point about the millions of women worldwide who drink moderately throughout pregnancy with no problems - as you say, not much of a programme if this story was covered. The one woman out of millions who has had problems regardless of moderate drinking is a much more interesting programme - if this was usual, it wouldn't have the 'shock factor' which makes a good programme.

incy · 03/10/2006 10:15

This is an excellent article in the Sunday Times the other week about the 'dangers' to pregnant women which puts it all in perspective pregnancy article

Piffle · 03/10/2006 10:17

With ds I spent most of early pregnancy getting drunik 3-4 x a week -I had no idea I was pregnant, my p at the time was in a band and we travelled all over in pubs
When I was 13 weeks I found out panicked and guilt tripped.
DS is a phenomenal child, but there for the grace of God go I.
When ttc dd I gave up drink, I did get cravings for lager after hyperemesis waned at 20 weeks. I had one sip a few x a week
DD was born with a rare genetic syndrome which has been explored to see if has links to FASD.

This pregnancy, little, very little and not often

expatinscotland · 03/10/2006 10:19

I was soooo vomitous w/both girls I could hardly drink water, let alone booze.

W/DD1, I binged when I was about 2 weeks pregnant, b/c I didn't know I was pregnant.

Then I had a few shandies when I was about 7 months pregnant.

W/DD2, I had two glasses of wine at about 10 weeks along.

That was it.

I was too busy spewing to drink.

ScareyCaligulaCorday · 03/10/2006 10:21

Great article Incy.

I don't know who Daisy Waugh is, but I love her

carrotcake · 03/10/2006 12:38

I was pretty horrified by this programme, there is enough guilt around, but it was the feotus acting jerkily on the scan after one drink that scared me. And the doctor who said their livers can't cope with it even though they're only getting a tiny bit, horrible thought. I haven't drunk much this time, when I fancy wine about once a fortnight, I only have a few sips or a spritzer but I've definitely enjoyed a couple of glasses in last two pg's. That girl drinking five or six large glasses was quite worrying too, she thought it was fine as it was still moving... probably is fine, but you know, I think it's more about education than being judgemental which is sort of what the programme was aiming at, making the moderate drinkers more aware of units/risks etc. Most of the women on the there were shocked to realise how much they were actually drinking. It has put me off for now anyway...

carrotcake · 03/10/2006 13:05

But, just read Daisy Waugh's article, and agree with too, lol to the man taking away woman's wine glass! Why is pregnancy such a muddle of guitly feelings, sigh....

flutterbee · 03/10/2006 13:11

Sorry to say this but I think that drinking whilst pg is as bad as smoking whilst pg.

At the moment that is only my opinion but I dare say that as with smoking drinking will become more and more socially unacceptable whilst pg and fewer people will do it, and fingers crossed it will then become socially unacceptable to drink on a regular basis full stop.
