Best sling for newborns?

hi

I'm completely new to this and just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for a good sling for baby aged newborn and upwards?

I'm not going to breastfeed though, so when would I use the sling? is it still useful for other things?

thanks Smile

go for something stretchy that will be comfy and close for you and little one. Check out moby wraps or the budget version which we chose and were very happy with from Victoria sling lady. You will get the hang of putting them on really quickly and once you are wearing it you can just keep it on and pop baby in and out. We used ours daily for at least the first 4 months when she got a bit big and needed something with more support. Honestly the single best buy for early months enjoy!

I agree, a stretchy wrap is fantastic with a newborn. I have a Moby wrap but I bought a friend a stretchy from the Lenny Lamb outlet which was a bit cheaper, and its a gorgeous wrap too.

I've wrapped DD for walks, round the supermarket so I have both hands free, when I couldn't get her to sleep and when she was very upset being wrapped would settle her beautifully.

I second a stretchy for the early days, we have a Kari-Me one which is fab. Beyond that, check out your local sling library where you can try out and even hire ones beyond that; there is a lot to chose from, from woven wraps to ring slings and loads of buckles SSC (soft structured carriers), and they can be pricey, so worth trying to see what suits you before buying, although there is a very good second hand market too.

Lovely for feeling close and cuddly husband loved it too. Useful for soothing restless baby, getting through evenings where they may not want to be put down and want to be jigged about. Ours slept quickly once she was in there and preferred it to a buggy when out and about. Also brilliant for shopping without messing about with a buggy or putting them in a trolley.

Definitely agree- best thing I had for first four months. Moby are the best, so you can do everyday stuff and got out and about without pram faff. Plus you don't need to worry about pram suits etc when its cold: just add cardi and hat to everyday clothes.

I loved my caboo (think it is called close now) really easy to use ring sling very stretchy and lovely for winter to wrap a snuggly coat over.

MrsAtticus · 26/10/2014 16:40

I agree about stretchy wrap for newborn. I had this and used it for ages with my first. My second was bigger and I quite quickly moved on to this which I love, as I can have my 6 month old on my back while I do stuff if he is unsettled.
I never used sling for BFing, just for going out and also in the house if they were unsettled and I needed to get on with things.

Theorientcalf · 26/10/2014 17:40

We have a Caboo Close, it's very comfy. Much more than the baby Bjorn I had with DC1, hated it.

CurlsLDN · 26/10/2014 19:00

Agree on the close caboo. So snuggly! Ds loved it straight from birth. Soft stretchy slings like this and others cuddle them in so they can heat your heartbeat and feel you breathe. As close to being in the womb as possible.
I've never bf in mine, but it's fantastic when ds is having a tough day and won't be put down. He's now six months and has had a tough week with teething pain. Lots of crying. I popped him in the sling and was able to get on with the washing up and tidying around the house with a calm and content baby

hollie84 · 26/10/2014 19:05

I had a caboo/close too, loved it. Never used it for breastfeeding though, could never see how that would be safe.

Still use a sling a lot with DS2 who is 8 months - he loves being on my back at home - a buckled carrier rather than a stretchy now though.

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 26/10/2014 21:28

Stretchy wrap (found the long tails on a Close annoying).

I have bf both my kids to 2 but never fed in a sling. I would not see that as a primary purpose of a sling at all.Smile

TwiggyHeart · 26/10/2014 21:33

Another vote for the Close, it's brilliant and not too pricey to buy new.

JudyBlumeRocks · 26/10/2014 21:43

A sling is an absolute lifesaver. I had the papoozle which was brilliant. Comfy and easy to use. Also looked quite stylish, I liked to think!

JudyBlumeRocks · 26/10/2014 21:45

Sorry, yes also meant to say I wouldn't go for a crotch-dangler type like the baby bjorn. They're not great for baby's hips, and in my experience not very comfortable for you either. Stretchy wrap type one is the way to go.

Fissawissa · 27/10/2014 00:07

I too recommend the Moby wrap - haven't tried breastfeeding in it though.

polkadotdelight · 27/10/2014 09:00

I had a sling consultation yesterday (DH tried them out too) and we have decided on a close caboo. We probably won't be able to use it past 6 months but we loved the comfort and simpicity of it.

Mumraathenoisylion · 27/10/2014 09:13

Really penguin? I loved the long tails as I wrapped them around and tied them so made dd feel even more secure. We didn't use our caboo past 6 months then I bought a mei tai wrap which was/is (I need to sell it) brilliant. I think you can use those from newborn too but the caboo felt more snuggly.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 27/10/2014 09:15

Another vote for the close. I Have fed in it, but find it useful for clingy baby days. DS seems to sleep well in there.
