Hi All

I am 20 week's pregnant and have been back and forth in hospital, GP ect with regards to my low blood count (only 8.0!). I have been advised 5mg folic acid for last two months plus i had 5xB12 injections last week. Guess what my blood count is still 8.0 (It was 8.0 even before started taking 5mg folic acid).
Please can some one advise what to do now?? GP says i might have blood transfusion before due date??. I am scared at the moment as dont know much about all this and this is my first baby (I had ectopic in 2012).

Do i really need private consultation to treat blood level as no one seems to be interested to sort the problem (even after having 5 blood tests!!!). if yes can someone recommend good consultant or Hospital in London/Essex please.
Sorry to ask so many questions ladies. A good advise really appreciated. thanks in advance all.

If you have thalassaemia trait, then there is no way to treat the condition as such as it is a genetic change in your blood's haemoglobin. (Is it alpha or beta thalassaemia?)

Having a haemoglobin level of 8.0 is too low for safety, if you were to have a bleed in labour, and it will be affecting your oxygenation, which might have an impact on the foetus.

Because you have a haematological condition, you need to be under a haematology consultant for management; but if you are in the UK, and a UK citizen/resident, this will be on the NHS, not private.

You may need a transfusion but it will be up to the managing consultant to decide that.
