My ds was 9lb 10oz and it hurt like hell. Im terrified to have more. 11lb how on earth did you manage that? How were the births? natural? Ive always been told not to worry because your firsts always ment to be bigger...obviously thats not true aaaahhhhhh

lemonaid · 02/10/2006 20:28

DS was 10lb 5.5oz but I did have an emergency c/s. I'm still planning on VBAC with (purely hypothetical at this stage) #2 but do wonder if they are likely to get bigger. I do know someone who delivered a 13-pound third baby vaginally with no problems at all, though. How were your first two births?

hermykne · 02/10/2006 20:35

i had ds 11lb 2 , c/s, but a lady two hours later had a boy at 12lb something vaginally and it was her 5th.

Ruth2808 · 02/10/2006 20:58

The first birth although long was a normal vaginal delivery the second though was a bit of a nightmare I was labouring away but he didn't want to drop into my pelvis at all. It was only when I was all set for a cs that he finally decided to make an appearance! I was always told it got easier yeah sure!

Wow....i thought 9lb 10oz was big and traumatic. I was pushing for an hour and a half, in the end it was forceps delivery, they tried the suction cap first (which i found hurt more than forceps). How about you lot? did any of you manage without forceps or suction cap?

lemonaid · 02/10/2006 22:24

I was pushing for an hour and a half; they were going to try ventouse but once we got into theatre and had a good look they decided that it was too risky and went straight for c/s.

Gingeme · 02/10/2006 22:33

Hi ladies Im 36 weeks with ds4. My first ds was 8lb 70z and was normal delivery but I had LOADS of stitches. My 2nd ds was 7lb 13 and my 3rd ds was just 7lb 60z. So I thought oh good they do get smaller. Now the last 2 mw appointments Ive had theyve both asked 'do you have big babies?'.
Even my dh said to me earlier today'your alot bigger than you were with the last ds!'. Cheers matey(not)

auntymandy · 02/10/2006 22:34

my last 2 were quite big, both 'normal' deliveries. Gas and air no stitches

cece · 02/10/2006 23:26

DS was 11 lb 4 and vb. Did have pethidine and gas and air though. Pushed for about 45 mins, which was a lot less than dd. She was 8 lbs and took me two hours to push her out!

The midwife qwho delivered said her biggest one (to deliver) was 15 lb I think...

BTW big babies are great once out, feed and sleep really well...

lorna3586 · 03/10/2006 00:13

Yes I agree, i love big babys.

eidsvold · 03/10/2006 01:37

friend had her second - 12lb 2oz - vaginally - just gas and air..... no real dramas - if that is comforting.

mamamaaargh · 03/10/2006 01:55

No way!!! How did it get out??

Just cannot believe that it's possible - my 6lb 11 oz was hard enough. Thought I was giving birth to an elephant! Big congrats to anyone who's managed that, especially with no pain relief. Am very impressed!

Ruth2808 · 03/10/2006 11:37

Any more Big Baby mommies out there at the moment?

dd was 9lb 4oz which is big for given the fact i'm 4ft 11in. Noone said she would be big all I got was "oh she will be average"..average yeah right..! It was only the day after her birth that the mw who saw me during my pregnancy and was with me for the first half of labour said "oh year I knew she would be big but didn't want to scare you"

I'm 23 weeks now and it does often cross my mind how big ds2b will be...I suppose I am nieve (sp//?) and trust my mw..

DD was gorgeous when born BUT i must admit I hated the comment from people when she was born..My what a big girl..grrrr. She's a baby ffs. OK maybe me being a tad sensitive but to me they were calling my dd...

Gem13 · 03/10/2006 15:46

I had a 9'11 with great difficulty but that was due to the fact that he had his arm beside his head. I was told he would be around the 7lb mark as I was pretty compact.

The birthing unit I transferred from (due to the fact he wasn't going to come out after 5 hours of pushing) told me the next day when I returned to show him off, that they'd had a 12'5 that night! As it was a birthing unit, they don't offer c-sections or anything stronger than gas and air so it must have been born 'reasonably' easy-ish.

I don't think weight is as much of an issue as presentation and other factors. Some women have a really hard time with 5 or 6 pounders.

WinkyGirl · 03/10/2006 16:12

My dd was 9lb 10oz and I gave birth vaginally after 1.5 hours of pushing. I had an epidural and an epistiotomy. They thought she would be around 8lb and were surprised when they weighed her!
What annoyed me was that in the last few weeks of pregnancy my midwife/consultant said I was big because I had a high amount of amniotic fluid not a big baby.
I also like her being a bigger baby as she slept well and has been quite advanced. But I am worried for next time because I dont want a caeserean.

LaidbackinAsia · 03/10/2006 16:38

Hi Ruth - both my DS's were brutes, DS 1 was 8lb 4 and DS 2 10lb 4 oz. Both born vaginally and with gas and air . Had tear with DS2 (home birth) due to mild shoulder dystocia. Am pregnant with number 3 ( 17 weeks) and dreading even bigger baby. That said, midwives very supportive of vaginal birth . You should get tested for gestational diabetes at 28 weeks as previous big babies can sometmes be an indicator.

Good Luck ...Big babies Rock !!

TuttiFrutti · 03/10/2006 16:48

Agree with Gem, it's not so much weight as presentation which causes problems and, even more than that, head circumference.

All the women in my family have big babies with massive heads. I was a 9lb baby and a difficult forceps delivery and my ds was 9lb 8 and an emergency cs. The pediatrician said it was the biggest head circumference he had seen for 2 months. Having an elective cs next time!

That probably isn't much comfort to you Ruth - but big babies can be straightforward deliveries if the head isn't too big and they are in the right position, especially if it's your third.

Imafairy · 03/10/2006 20:59

DS1 was 10lbs (delivered by foreceps) so I was naturally worried about the weight of DS2 . I think I ate more healthily during the second pregnancy, both for my figure's sake and also for baby's size sake. I also demanded early sweeps for DS2 (DS1 was 13 days late) and when he was born (5 days late) he wighed in at a puny 8 and a half pounds!!!
BTW - a consultant told me at 34 weeks that this was "was going to be at least as big" and was obviously wrong!!!
All the best

Ruth2808 · 04/10/2006 10:26

Thankyou for all your support I'll keep you posted on what weight this one turns out to be you might see me in the guinness book of records!! With my DS2 I tried to have a healthier diet but obviously it didn't have an effect on his final weight 10lbs 10! I am due for a glucose test in November I had one for each of my other children but they all came up negative maybe I just build'em big.

auntymandy · 05/10/2006 16:14

ds3 10lb 2
ds4 9lb 15

thelittlestboho · 05/10/2006 16:19

DD1 was 8 12,DD2 was 9 10, although I was told that there was a chance she'd be 10 and a half!! Not a stitch either, how I managed that I'll never know. DD3's due February and we'll just have to see if she tops the scales. I'd feel funny having a "smaller" baby now I think, I like to have a wee chunk, lol.

Tlb

sallyrosie · 05/10/2006 17:03

My first LO was 8lb 12oz, born normal delivery with epidural and episiotomy. Second 9lb 5oz - normal delivery with just gas and air and second stage only lasted 12 minutes. No tear despite shoulder dystocia.
If head in the right position and not too big then not a problem.
