low lying placenta?

Hi,

I went for a scan and the doctor told me I have marginal placenta previa. I then had a more detailed 3d scan and this doctor told me I don't!. She said the lower edge of the placenta is more than 2cms away from the cervix. She did say, however that there was a small retromembranous heamatoma which the other doctor could have confused with placenta previa. I'm really confused by all this. I am not in the UK at the moment but am due to return soon.

I've looked on line and if the placenta is more than 2cms away it says it is grade 1 placenta previa. Is this correct? Also what about the heamatoma is this anything to worry about?

No idea about the heamatoma, sorry.
How many weeks are you?
In UK, if you have any sort of previa noted at a standard 20 week scan (typically the last scan), you are invited back for a further scan around 32 (I think) weeks.
As your bump grows, the placenta tends to lift naturally - partially blow up a balloon, put your finger about 1/4 of the way up, and continue blowing; your finger will rise. This is what happens as your uterus stretches.

The majority of placenta previa's noted at 20 weeks have grown out by 32 weeks, allowing for a normal birth. If you still have placenta previa at term, you will need a c-section.

How far along are you? I've got a scan in 3 weeks to check my placenta, I'll be just under 33 weeks. My placenta had an 'overhang' and they want to make sure it's moved, they weren't overly worried and I got the impression that its very very common for them to move up as addicted said. Just make sure you get another scan around 32 weeks to make sure x

Hi lost. I have pp. at my 20 week scan the placenta was abutting the os. At 26 weeks it was 1.5 cm away and at 32 it was 1 cm away. The consultants said that scans depend on the angle, shadow of the baby all kinds of things. For my 26 week scan I probably had an overly full bladder.

Generally the trend is for the placenta to move away from the os, 90% do. I have read that this is less likely with a posterior placenta though.

I am waiting for my 36 week scan to see where it is. If it is 2 cm away then I can have a vaginal delivery. If not then c section. I don't really understand the grades.

No idea about heamotoma though sorry.

I had a low lying posterior placenta at my 20 week scan & have been worried for weeks as had read online what Elletorrito posted i.e. that posterior are less likely to move. However, had 34 week scan today & it has moved well away, so just to reassure you it can happen!

Not sure re heamatoma though - could you speak to your midwife & see what she says?

I had a low lying anterior placenta noted at 20 weeks- not covering the os but next to it. I had a scan at 28 weeks and it hadn't moved, but by 35 weeks it seemed to have shifted a couple of cms away. Apparently over 90% of them do move up and out of the way, so fingers crossed it will for you.
