Hi all

So I just wondered how many of u wash all your fruit and veg?

I recently found out after eating at my aunts that she didn't and am now worried about toxoplasmosis. I always wash mine!

I had a tfmr at 20 weeks earlier this year so am probably super anxious and paranoid.

Were they caked in mud? If not then you'll probably live.
Presumably they were boiled before you ate them anyway?
Don't worry.

Missed the bit about your TFMR, sorry to hear that. But still think you'll be fine Smile

Worrywart99 · 22/10/2014 15:11

Hit her

Thank you. They weren't cooked they were tomatoes and apples

I never wash fruit and veg, never have done. Then again I'm the sort to eat berries as I'm picking them and apples straight from the tree. I probably should wash fruit and veg as I'm pregnant but it's never something I've thought of.

Thanks blueberry. Made me feel much more settled x

It's natural to be anxious in pregnancy - especially after a tfmr. You should be absolutely fine from the veggies Smile hope your pregnancy is going well.

I tested negative for toxo a few years ago. This really surprised me.

I grew up with outdoor cats, garden without gloves and have eaten lots of dirty fruit/veg in my life so that I have come to the conclusion it can't be that easy to pick up from soil. I do wash my fruit and veg when pregnant but would not massively worry about apples and tomatoes since they don't grow in the ground...

I do, however, cook the crap out of meat as I think that is the main source of transmission.

Thank u so much folks. You've made me feel better. Really struggling in this pregnancy to stay calm

Worrywart Flowers I'm a worrier too - also with good reason.

Don't know if it helps but what helps me is to focus on the numbers of healthy babies born, despite all the worries. For example, I think very few toxo affected babies are born each year and few doctors actually see it. So in terms of numbers, the risks are very low.

All the very best.

MissBlennerhasset · 22/10/2014 16:15

Unlike Rooners I have nothing to do with cats or gardening and I tested positive! It's very, very common, up to a third of the population have had it. The risk is only contracting it during pregnancy and according to my doctor, you would probably notice the flu-like symptoms. I really think you'll be ok though.

Worrywart99 · 22/10/2014 16:50

I'm all chocked up just now with blocked up nose and feel rotten so I'm pretty scared

I think often there are no symptoms?

Realistically, you probably just have a cold. But don't fret and make yourself miserable. Why not talk to GP about your concerns and they might test you to put your mind at ease. After what happened before, I think everyone would be very compassionate Flowers

Peaceloveandbiscuits · 22/10/2014 17:02

I agree with Rooner (hi! Grin) about seeing your GP. They might be able to offer some solutions to your anxiety as well. It's miserable being anxious all the time about everything.

IamOldGregg · 22/10/2014 17:10

No, please don't worry unnecessarily. If you think how many thousands of pregnant women around the globe eat fruit and veg unwashed vs the relatively small number of toxoplasmosis infection during pregnancy your odds are great. As mentioned upthread, the higher risk factors are from meat and cat faeces.

I eat fruit off trees, and always forget to scrub my potatoes and wash fruit and veg. I am pregnant and not worried at all.

I agree you should ask for a blood test from your GP - but only to help put your mind at rest.

I am very sorry for what you have been through, it must make it very hard to stay positive and worry free :(

Worrywart99 · 22/10/2014 17:30

Thanks everyone. Just finding this whole process really difficult especially when things like this get into my head :( appreciate all ur time to reply to me xx
