measuring on the small side - scared

I have got myself into a bit of a panic. Everyone has been commenting on how small I look for my pregnancy. I am now 28+4 and have just been measured by my midwife. Apparently my bump is measuring a little on the small side and she is sending me for a growth scan. I have to wait until next Tuesday and really getting worked up about it. My baby is moving regularly but just cant help thinking something is wrong. Has anyone else experienced this?

Only anecdotal I'm afraid, from the lady in the post-natal bed next to me this weekend. She measured small at 28 weeks, had growth scan - baby on small side and there was some concern. Baby boy delivered at 40+3 9lbs 4 oz Smile

Fingers crossed that all is well for you

When I was expecting my now 7 year old, I measured small most of the way through. I ended up with about 4 growth scans in the last 10 weeks or so. My bump measured 30 cm around at the end of my pregnancy, at 40+10 DS was , and still is now, on the small side, but perfectly healthy. It is good they are checking, but I think it is very common for people to measure small.

don't worry i had that problem with my pregnancies both of my children are fit and health they were just on the small side when born first was 5lb 6 second 5lb 15 both were full term

and remember growth scans aren't always accurateSmile

My "small" baby, by fundal measurements and scans (although not alarmingly small when actually scanned, just predicted to be on the smaller side of average) was 8lb 10 at 39 weeks.

Don't panic! Wait to see what the scan says (and even then, growth scans are notoriously inaccurate, but they should also do things like check fluid levels and cord flow, which may put your mind at rest).

Thanks ladies. I would have considered myself fairly slim before my pregnancy and do make an effort to eat healthy. By no means do I deny myseLf anything but just eat heaps of fruit, veg and whole grains. Hopefully bump is just measuring small and baby is well. I have had the occasional glass of wine through out my pregnancy and cant stop thinking i've caused problems through that....

No the odd glass of wine wouldn't cause a small bump if anything it's got extra calories Grin

Bumpngrind85 · 22/10/2014 14:40

thanks Funkytown. Some people are really funny about alcohol & pregnancy but when I (rarely) go out these days my friends pour me a glass and tell me there's nothing wrong with one. I guess it's just down to personal preference. Will just be happy to have the all clear next week.

Just to add my own experience. At about the same stage as you are, with my last pregnancy, I got a gasp and ooh from the midwife stating my bump was too small. I also got lots of comments from other people stating my bump was too small. When I was sent for an emergency growth scan, they stated baby was perfectly average. He was born at 40+10 and was 7lb 3oz. He's now taller than average for his age at 5yrs. Also, the odd little glass of wine here and there? Why not!

Bumpngrind85 · 22/10/2014 15:04

thank you rosabeth I am so fed up with people saying how small bump is. Early on I was praying I didnt get huge and now angry at myself for wishing that. Feeling reasured now though.

All my babies have been born smaller . And I always measured small. I recently gave birth at 26+2 and I didn't have bump people on the matenity ward thought I was only in 1st trimester or just bloated... even when I carried both twins I was smaller than they expected.

Don't freak out too much, easier said then done I know, but you'll know more at your scan and as long as you're feeling your baby move that's good news :) xx

I am currently 25+5 and have a small bump; people at work keep asking me where I am hiding it and on the 'guess the bump' thread they guessed 10 weeks behind! I have my 25w midwife appt tomorrow evening so am a little bit apprehensive, therefore following this thread with interest!

Solasum · 22/10/2014 18:36

I measured small all the time and had a small baby. Nothing wrong with that, I think it is easy to panic when told measuring small and to forget that for there to be an average there have to be some babies below it. DS is perfectly healthy, and labour was straightforward. Woman opposite had twins who were both almost the same size as DS though Confused
