sore hips at night

Hi im 27weeks with dc2 and im now at the stage where im waking up during the night with a dead hip (whichever one im lying on). Im turning all night like some sort of rotisserie chicken! I sleep most nights with a long pregnancy pillow and an ordinary pillow behind my back (dh is clinging on for dear life). Last night I put another pillow underneath my hip. It made no difference. Anyone else any other suggestions? Im finding my legs feel sore and heavy for most of the next day. I dnt remember having this problem just as early last time although I did have it. Tia.

I've had this both times. I've found it comes and goes - it was bad around 25(ish) weeks - I think because my bump was growing rapidly, but it settled again for a few weeks. Now I'm almost 34 weeks & its starting up again & I recall it doing similar last time, & only stopping once I'd had ds.

There doesn't seem to be much I can do about it except change positions which gets harder as time goes on. Sorry to not be any more help but just wanted you to know you are not alone!

Thanks for the reply omama. Glad im not the only one. Like you im just changing positions as well. I'd just put it down to the extra weight. iv also started my random wakening at 4am for no reason. Last time it was 5am. Ow well guess its just my body preparing for things to come Grin

Hi..same problem here.I am 35 weeks tomorrow and I feel pain in my hips since 30th week.
Only solution for me to change position from one side to another and occasionally to prop myself almost in a sitting position to sleep.
Good luck and sorry to not to be more helpful....

Put the pillow between your knees as you lay on your side. Aligns your hips I think. Was better position for me. Good luck.

myotherusernameisbetter · 21/10/2014 23:27

You may have sacroiliac hip dysfunction - i'd get it checked out as it gets worse if you do the wrong things :(

Valsoldknickers · 21/10/2014 23:34

I was going to share my experience but LovelyMarchHare took the words right out of my mouth. A cushion or pillow between the knees (preferably lying on your left side whether pregnant or not) can be like a miracle cure!

I hope that you find some comfort soon.

I'm almost 26 weeks, been getting this for a couple weeks now. My doctor advised to take a paracetamol or two before bed (as well as pillow between legs) and that worked last night. I also find it isn't so bad if I've done yoga or gone swimming that day, stretching the muscles seems to help!

Taura · 22/10/2014 05:00

I've been getting a reasonably good level of comfort by putting a pillow (thinnish) under my waist, not my hips. This then keeps my spine in a straighter line and seems to stop the hips stinging.

However don't listen to me because I'm awake at 5am :)

runawaysimba · 22/10/2014 05:34

I got this during and after pregnancy - a magnesium supplement really helped. They're safe to take, but run it by your midwife first.

Same problem here, wake up every morning with sore legs and hips! The last couple of nights I've been using an extra pillow to prop myself up into an almost sitting position. This has helped a little.

Allthelittlefoxes · 22/10/2014 08:30

I had this both pregnancies and its horrible :(

Will second the pillow between the knees, but I also doubled over a big duvet and slept on top of it, with my normal duvet over the top of me IYKWIM? Helped a bit as seemed to reduce the pressure. Hope you feel better soon.

Chloris33 · 22/10/2014 11:35

I wake with various aches - legs and sometimes hips - a lot, despite trying various different pillow combos & the dream genii pregnancy pillow. I do find yoga can help, though it's not a total cure. The evening I have my antenatal yoga class I sleep a lot better at night & have less aches in the night. Sometimes I get up in the night and do some yoga stretches and then feel a bit (not completely) better and manage to go back to sleep. Sleeping on top of a duvet as Allthelittlefoxes mentioned can make things easier on the hips.

I'd second the Physio recommendation. I had a problem with my sacro ileac joint (spelling?) that I put down to general pregnancy aches until it got really unbearable (could barely walk) & went to GP. Physio helped hugely but it wouldn't have gotten so bad had I gone sooner.

wigfieldrocks · 24/10/2014 12:45

I too have this and saw a great physio who recommended a large pillow between my legs at night and using a mattress topper or a duvet on too of the mattress which has worked wonders.
