I'm nearly 16 weeks, really not sleeping well atm so kind of cranky and all I really, really, really want is some blue cheese, preferably Stilton. I've heard that mould ripened cheese is ok IF it's heated through until piping hot, does anyone know if this is the case? I'm pretty sure most of it is made with pasturised milk as well.

Would Stilton and broccoli soup fix the craving??

According to NHS Stilton is safe! Enjoy!

I'm pretty sure you're allowed stilton because it's a hard cheese. I'm sure I read that on the nhs website

Stilton isn't a mould ripened cheese (that's things like Brie and Camembert), it's a hard blue cheese so as someone else pointed out, even the NHS says it's ok!

Stilton is mould ripened... The blue bits are the mould... But it's too dry for the listeria bacteria to live in, which is why it's ok to eat when you're pregnant. So that's good news OP!

I keep dreaming of a Stilton, Parma ham, pear and walnut salad.

Anyone know if Parma ham is okay? (Sorry to hijack!)

Rinkydinkypink · 21/10/2014 05:46

Stilton is fine! I ate loads of it. Palma ham is up to you but I also ate loads of it! On the continent it's classed as very safe in pregnancy. Pears and walnuts fine.

Listeria is the big risk in pregnancy and is what needs to be avoided as this can damage baby. Pate, soft unpasteurised cheese are def to be avoided.

Food poisoning is unlikely to hurt baby but may be very unpleasant for you.

Having eaten half a block of Stilton on Saturday night I will say go eat and enjoy! However be prepared for the after effects - i was up half the night with acid reflux!

Thank you, you have no idea how much this has actually made my day :-) I'm a proper cheese addict. Last time round I found everything gave me indigestion unless I put chilli sauce on it.

There's actually very little evidence about cured meats being bad for you. If you want to be on the safe side, freeze it for a couple of days before you eat it, as that will kill any harmful bacteria if there are any.

I can fully recommend reading 'Expecting Better' by Emily Oster, it will give you a lot of information on the actual research that goes behind the advice given.
