Pain in my sternum? Like a proper stapling pain in the middle of my chest, especially when I sit up from lying down. I don't think it's my heart or anything dramatic so I'm guessing it's a muscle thing as my body stretches? I don't think I need to worry but I'm guessing I'm looking for some reassurance.

It's bloody painful and just makes even the smallest things harder and frankly it's a bit dull! Baby was transverse at last check up so I'm guessing could be connected?

Anyone got any tips for making it less uncomfortable? Or should I be getting it checked out?

I would play it safe and call your midwife - acute pain (like really bad indigestion) can be associated with preeclampsia so worth getting it checked out.

schmalice · 19/10/2014 22:05

Oh blimey, really? I'll give them a call in the morning. My BP has been fine tho, hasn't altered at all.

Probably no problem then - if it is epigastric pain from preeclampsiaI think it is always associated with high blood pressure. Maybe baby has sprained something in there!

Peaceloveandbiscuits · 19/10/2014 22:37

Could it be really horrendous heartburn? I'd never had it before now so I had no idea how cripplingly painful it could be! Got any Rennies in the house?

mammycampbell · 19/10/2014 22:47

ah, was going to say heartburn too, Peace! have also just started suffering though the pain is just below sternum for me. Am 31+3 so maybe you're further along and it is higher up? Never knew it could be so painful and feeling v sorry now for pooh-poohing DH's suffering from it in the past whilst gleefully finishing off his glass of wine since he couldn't face it I have found being propped up a bit more in bed helps too. X

Haggisfish · 19/10/2014 22:51

Could well be. Try drinking cold milk and sitting up for now-you can take ranitidine for it and special triple action gaviscon.

schmalice · 19/10/2014 23:13

I've not had heartburn so far so maybe the baby has decided that should be my new pregnancy joy! I'll get some gaviscon on the way to work, in the mean time I shall drink milk in bed a bit like a child. It's all glamour isn't it!!

Thanks all, it's just quite nice being able to check with someone who isn't my poor DH, who just looks worried every time I complain of something new and then all his suggestions out of hand, poor boy!!

I would definitely ring my midwife if I were you. Pain in the chest isn't normal and therefore needs to be checked out. It could be anything from indigestion to a pulmonary embolism. One is harmless the other can be fatal. Only a trained medical professional will be able to tell you after examination what it is. Ring please!

(I know that sounds very dramatic but its only facts written down)

I had this, it was just pressure on the ribs from baby and internal organs all jostling for room... It was awful! It disappeared as soon as baby dropped.

blackwidow74 · 20/10/2014 11:18

i hd this in pevious pregnancies and was told it was probably the weight of my growing boobs and slight compression on chest where slept on side ... it really does hurt at the time though ... try and sleep with a pillow between your arms if on your side and avoid sleeping on back

schmalice · 20/10/2014 11:31

Morning all! Just to give you a quick update I spoke to my MW this morning just be on the safe side and apparently pain in your breast bone is A Thing in pregnancy, especially if the baby is transverse as it's most likely the baby pulling your ribs a bit wide (thanks darling child!). She also said it could be the way I've been lying at night like you suggested blackwidow .

As my BP is the same as my booking in app and I haven't any shortness of breath (other than being 30 weeks and carrying a tab too much subcutaneous Cake)then she really wasn't worried.

Thanks all for the advice, it really is a bundle of fun this pregnancy lark!

Glad you got it solved! I'm 30 weeks too and it's suddenly got Really Hard, hasn't it??

Jersey37 · 20/10/2014 11:39

30 WEEK JOY! Just wait until 31-32 weeks. At this point my first real pain started. If I have been sitting down for more than 5 minutes... I then stand up and try to take one step and then BAM... it is like I've been kicked in the groin. I guess it is the weight moving and it eases after about a minute or two whilst I try to walk (like a penguin).

Funny thing is I'm 34 weeks today - and touch wood - the last two days I've not had this. Hopefully that gives you a little hope.... ;)

schmalice · 20/10/2014 20:08

Oh Jersey you are really selling it to me! I must say I'm starting to struggle and I think I'm measuring small. And yes to the hard bump , it's also got a bit of downy fuzz which is a tad alarming!
