I seem to remember reading somewhere that midwives expect ladies with a lower weight prepregnancy to gain more weight (proportionately) over the course of their pregnancy than those who are heavy to begin. The truth is that your body lays down extra fat in preparation for breast feeding, add to that the fluid around your baby and your placenta and the scales can show a much higher figure than you're used to. It definitely won't all be fat. My friend's placenta weighed 8lbs!!!

Larger ladies don't gain as much because they don't need to. For example. I was 14st at the beginning of my pregnancy. I'm 14st 9 now at 39 weeks. I've been doing slimming world pretty strictly though, as naturally I was worried about GD from the outset.

Ask your midwife what she thinks is a normal amount of weight gain for someone of your height and starting weight. If you've put on too much I can really recommend slimming world, they do a special plan for pregnancy and I've not been at all hungry.

I'm 5"7 and I put on 3 stone with ds while pregnant. I was very lucky and lost it pretty quickly.
I'm currently 24 weeks with ds2 and have put on a stone so far. Seems to be just my belly really and nowhere else. I'm not worried as all scans have said baby is growing correct to dates.
You should have a midwife app and glucose bloods at 28 weeks so these ahold give you more info.

Step one: STOP WEIGHING YOURSELF. The end. There's a reason they don't weigh you at every midwife appointment these days - it's a poor indicator of anything. The urine dip is what's going to flag up GD, not your weight.

In two pregnancies, I haven't the faintest idea what I weighed before, during or after. Life is a happier place without scales.

Bloody well said Elphaba.

It's a cliché comment but FGS, you are pregnant! Embrace it, enjoy it and think how lucky you are. Who cares how fat you get, as long as you and your baby are healthy. A million woman would kill to be in your shoes.

I'm 5'3 and at 23 weeks am currently heavier than you. I didn't think of was so 'massive' until I read your OP.

I do have odd days when I wonder about my weight but I tried 4 years to get pregnant so to be frank the number on the scales means nothing.

tiggy2610 · 18/10/2014 23:02
  • I should add I'm only 7lbs heavier than you and midwife/consultant are very pleased with a happy healthy pregnancy.

With my DD I only gained her weight, placenta and water. The rest of me still stayed the same (5'6" & 8st) and I still got gestational diabetes! So it can happen either way Hmm

OwllwOOwllwO · 18/10/2014 23:11

Oh and she was born a healthy 7lbs 7oz

tobysmum77 · 19/10/2014 12:18

relax op I put on a good 3st with my first pregnancy, dd was 6lb15 (so no gd!) I lost it all within 18 months. With my second pregnancy about 2.5stone and lost it in 21/2 years.

Being pregnant totally changed my usually fast metabolism. Relax and buy new trousers Grin

thankyou i guess i just needed telling really.. ive always had issues with my weight and im obsessed with the scales! i know i shouldnt be but i just cant help it... i will get my partner to hide them!
i see my midwife next week so i'll speak to her about it then... im just a worrier if its not my weight its something else. i think its because its my first pregnancy and i havent really anyone to talk to apart from my partner but he hasnt a clue ha.. thank you anyway i do feel a tad better now knowing its normal :)

I only weigh myself when I visit MIL. We don't have any scales.

Was 5'4" and 10st12 pre preg, 11st12 at 23 weeks and now 12st2 1/2 at 26. I'm still 5'4" though Seems to be mostly boobs and bump.

I think that's pretty good going tbh, especially as I'm intending on eating All The Food over Christmas and putting on at least a stone in celebrations and pigs in blankets. You're pregnant, eat what your body tells you (within reason) and enjoy it.

RetroHippy · 19/10/2014 12:57

A brief google throws up a ballpark of 15-18 lbs by the end of the second tri. But really, as long as the GP/MW isn't worried, whatever you do/don't gain is fine.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 19/10/2014 13:20

That's less than 2 stone. Optimum I think is 2 stone throughout the pregnancy but I think only very disciplined women, or those with heavy morning sickness manage that (or those odd types who don't really care about food!) everyone I know put on more than 2 I put on 4 stop weighing yourself!

WorraLiberty · 19/10/2014 13:27

The most important thing here isn't your weight, but your diet.

Are you eating healthily? Are you over eating? How much exercise do you manage to get?

These are all factors in gaining weight regardless of whether you're pregnant or not.

Some pregnant women will gain lots of weight even if they're not over eating etc, but it's by no means a given fact that it will happen to everyone.
