Anyone got any experiences of delivery at either? according to the midwife I can chose which one I want and they're equidistant from our house, although St Mary's is slightly closer to my work (for appointments/emergencies). The only info I can get out of anyone I know on either so far is that the 3g/4g is crap at St Mary's and good at Wythenshaw which isn't exactly the sort of thing that I guess we should be basing the decision on (although I confess it would be good to have reception for hanging around times).

Although my own dc were all born at shameside general hospiyal I have several friends who gave birth at St Marys and had a brilliant experience
Never heard anything about Wythenshawe

I have a choice between bolton and st marys. Ive gone with bolton purely from a traffic point of view. I dont know which one is better for you. I have heard good things about st marys though.

I'm at St Marys and due 10/11 - when are you due? Like others I have heard great things about St Marys but I've literally not heard anything either good or bad about Wythenshawe.

Loving the fact that before each antenatal class I get to go to curry mile for dinner beforehand though.

Ohh that's a good point actually - can get DP to pop to Mughli for snacks!

Nor due til April, just getting my head round things atm :)

We are going to Whythenshawe (edd 13th Nov). We picked it because it is better for traffic, has more birthing centre rooms and the tour was really comprehensive. X

I too live equidistant from St. Mary's and Wythenshawe - they're much of a muchness for the midwife led units. From friends' experiences in both places - and a few detailed questions I asked during the tour as a result - I found that for me they had the same pros and cons.

Pros are that they have excellent obstetric and NIC units if any problems arise during the birth, and are quick to get to (except at rush hour, but hey ho Smile).

Cons are that they are both very big, VERY busy maternity units so you can be left alone more than you might like if everything is perfectly straightforward and you might be hurried out of the delivery room afterwards if they need the room.

Both places also have the usual postnatal wards where they kick your partner out and you try to sleep surrounded by newborn babies - hah!

I opted for neither, and had ds at St Mary's Birth Centre in Salford, what used to be Hope Hospital's maternity unit and is now a standalone midwife-run birth centre attached to St. Mary's in Manchester. I can't sing its praises enough. Small unit, one-to-one care from mw, all private rooms so partners can stay overnight (which was important to us - I really

...really didn't want to be left alone with strangers hours after giving birth), and just a lovely chilled environment. It would have been 7 mins by blue-light ambulance to St. Mary's if we had needed it, but everything went fine. I would highly recommend it to anyone in the area - it actually took us less time to drive to than our previous trips to St. Mary's and Wyrhenshawe!

I'm going to St Mary's as I know a lot of people at work who have all had fantastic care there including one who has had 2 very ill babies and they were looked after wonderfully all the way along. I'm only 32 weeks so haven't had first hand experience of the birth unit yet but I have had to go in a few times for bleeding/reduced movement and they've been lovely, reassuring and never had to wait too long (even when they've apologised for the wait) so so far I would definitely recommend it

woodwaj · 18/10/2014 20:24

I'm presuming this is the ops first and they dont allow first time mums in the maternity lead unit :(

geekaMaxima · 18/10/2014 20:39

They do allow first time mums in the midwife led unit / birth centre. Of course they do!

Only requirement is that you're low-risk (i.e., not under consultant care) and go into labour naturally between 37-42 weeks.

woodwaj · 18/10/2014 20:53

Ahh i was told otherwise! That's good to know though!
