Princess Royal Maternity Glasgow, any recent experiences?

My dd was born at the Southern General and although I didn't have a good experience there, I'm nervous about going to the Princess Royal for my c section in 5 weeks, but due to certain medical equipment being necessary I have no option.

Has anyone delivered there in the last year or so? What was it like? Any survival tips?

Oh, and I've been to the Royal Infirmary once and had to walk what seemed like miles from the multi storey car park, where is the maternity unit in relation to parking?!

Following this even though I'm not pregnant but I can't believe the change! When I had DS (nearly 11 years ago) I was in for 3 nights (after a vaginal birth) and they wanted to keep me in longer, I had to really protest to go home. That was at the queen mum's. Can't remember food situation though - I couldn't stomach much and lived off of carrot sticks and mango.

(They wanted to keep me in because DS wasn't feeding well, but it's because I was so stressed being in hospital!)

needaDiscoNap - apparently the NCT are trying to pick up the slack in the hospital by having 'breast feeding supporters' come onto the wards. These people are volunteers but are only available at certain times, so if you come in at night and are sent home first thing, you will miss them.
The midwife I last spoke to advised that it had been months since she had been able to sit down with a new mum and give a few hours support for breast feeding, and she felt that she didn't ever see herself having time to do this again.
I think we might be quite lucky in Glasgow that the hospital offers a breast feeding workshop at all given the cuts. Outcomes for breast feeding are supposed to be much higher if the mother has had an introduction prior to baby arriving.

Another due January at the PRM here.
I'm relieved to hear good things as I've previously had a stay in the gynae ward which was horrific.
Really was expecting the maternity to be the same so you've perked me up a bit Smile

I know Blue it's very reassuring :-) Everything I've heard about the Southern recently has been pretty poor in comparison.

Which is funny because any of my friends who had the option to choose all went for the southern

Chocolateporridge · 28/10/2014 21:46

I know, I'd have thought it would have improved in the four years since I had my dd.

I've been on the ward at the Southern a couple of times during this pregnancy with a few complications and I have to say that the midwives and staff have been absolutely fantastic, so maybe it's only the post-natal wards that have issues?

my experience of the southern was early mc and felt they were insensitive. yes it's common but it matters to the person going through it. That's why I didn't go there. chocolate I think you are right, people I know who went to the Southern said it was post natal they had issues with not the other bits.

Chocolateporridge · 30/10/2014 19:57

I had a miscarriage at the Southern last year and the care was truly awful, so unsympathetic, it dragged on for a whole month.

Yep, the more I think about it the more I'm glad to be at PRM for my c section!

I can unfortunately believe the unsympathetic care at the southern following a MC.
I was a patient there a few months after my DD died. They wanted to put me on a ward with pregnant women and worst of all on the post natal ward with newborns whilst I came around from GA. I stood my ground they eventually gave me a private room.

I'm currently a patient there super high risk and the care has been fairly none existent, patronising and down right humiliating.
But they may be our only hope of finally having a living baby so we are stuck with them. Should I get past 30 weeks I will be transferring my care elsewhere.

little bairn I am so sorry for your loss and that you had to go through that.

chocolate porridge I am sorry you had a similar experience there. I went to RAH for my 2 deliveries and was well looked after both times, once consultant led and cmu last week. That said my midwives that visit at home are from the southern and they have always been fab.

Chocolateporridge · 30/10/2014 21:15

Oh littlebairn, I'm so sorry for your loss and I hope you get through this stressful time with a happy result.

I have to say that my consultants at the Southern, Dr Roberts and Professor Cameron, have been absolutely fantastic and I couldn't have asked for better care from them, so although the wards aren't great, the professionals are, if that's any reassurance to you?
