Ugh ive got such bad heartburn. Im 28 wks and it started a couple of weeks ago. Been swigging the gaviscon but it doesn't really help. Had it bad with DD right up until i gave birth and im dreading the next 12 weeks of it. Does anyone know if I can take zantac or is there anything better than gaviscon?

Gavsicon advanced is good. I sleep propped up on two pillows and only eat small and often. It is horrible isn't it?

pinkangelita · 16/10/2014 20:40

Speak to your midwife and see if they will prescribe Zantac. I am suffering with horrific heartburn and the tablets are really helping. You can buy regular Zantac over the counter if you are desperate but always best to check with your midwife/GP first.

NinjaPanda34 · 16/10/2014 21:01

Thankfully Rennies are helping me at the moment. Here's hoping it goes after the births! :)

bayrans · 16/10/2014 21:07

Prescription strength Zantac is 150mg (OTC is 75mg) and is safe to take. I also suffered debilitating heartburn and was also prescribed omeprazole. Don't suffer, see your midwife or GP.
And I had the anecdotal 'hairy baby' which everyone says gives you bad heartburn coupled with the fact she was breech Wink

JennyBlueWren · 16/10/2014 21:17

Snap. Orange Rennies work on indigestion for me but not heartburn -it makes me sick then. For the indigestion cold milk helps -again not for heartburn.

When the pain gets too bad I soak a towel and wrap it around the lower ribs/upper bump, soothes it a bit.

I mostly get bad heartburn a few hours after eating anything very rich but also in the night after eating a proper meal. I now have a healthyish meal late afternoon and just toast or cereal in the evening. Mostly sorts it although I sometimes wake up very hungry. Maybe a good thing for sorting out my rubbish eating.

Don't mention it to anyone or else they'll go on about you having a hairy baby!

purplemurple1 · 16/10/2014 21:21

I've never heard the hairy baby thing before, I had mild heart burn with DC1 and he was very hairy (full head and side burns), this time my heartburn is really bad - maybe I'm having a monkey!

(Zantac here too btw)

stargirl1701 · 16/10/2014 21:21

I took Zantac in my last pg. It worked!

Petal26 · 16/10/2014 21:34

I've been taking Zantac on prescription since 16ish weeks (nearly 37 now). As soon as I started to get heartburn I asked for something stronger than Gaviscon as it didn't help during my last pregnancy at all. Only 1 or 2 tablets a day as needed. I'd say to go and see GP (get them for free on prescription Smile)

Bathtimesoaker · 16/10/2014 22:35

Gaviscon advanced is much better than Gaviscon double action. Rennies are good for your handbag though.

sleepysleepy · 16/10/2014 22:40

Another one who had first Zantac then omeprazole from eight weeks to the birth: my heartburn and vomiting were intolerable without them. Baby was (is) fine. And hairy!!

DesperateDelilah · 16/10/2014 22:45

Maximum zantac (ranitidine ) is 2x150 mg. My heartburn was so bad they put me on 4x150 for the duration as my doctors won't prescribe Proton pump inhibitors during pregnancy.

Milk makes heartburn worse although the cold is initially soothing. Bland foods. Don't eat after 6 on. Small meals. Avoid citrus. Try to sleep propped up if possible. Reduce tea and coffee.

Also I found drinking a sip of water before the gaviscon helped somehow. Is the gaviscon the thick extra strength one? I had it prescribed and walked around drinking it straight from the bottle.

Hope you feel better op.

DesperateDelilah · 16/10/2014 22:47

And dd had a full head of hair which everyone comments on - same as ds - I had horrible heartburn with him too.

Flux7001 · 16/10/2014 22:48

The solution is simple, give up wheat. I used to walk around with a bottle of gaviscon in my bag, swigging it from the bottle but my midwife told me to try giving up wheat for a week and it worked.

WerkSupp · 16/10/2014 22:49

I had dire heartburn and a bald baby.

amybeth11 · 16/10/2014 22:59

I've been given the gaviscon gavilast which has ranitidine in it but it only works every other time i take it! And personally i find it's worse when I haven't eaten in the hours leading up to bed. A bowl of porridge 20 mins before i lie down helps me get to sleep without heartburn, but i'm still up 4 times a night having to knock back gaviscon liquid or tablets. The tablets do make me feel a bit sick if i take too many though. Sleeping on my left side helps too. Thank goodness my baby boy is due in a couple of weeks so i wont have to deal with HB much longer! Also, my OH has thick dark hair, so I'm expecting baby boy to have the same ;)
My heart goes out to OP and everyone else suffering with HB!!

Marcipex · 16/10/2014 22:59

Me too WerkSupp

Haggisfish · 16/10/2014 23:01

Gaviscon gavilast won't have as much ranitidine on it as the pills-the pills are amazing.

lisucbgiberiocnha · 18/10/2014 23:32

I'm another one who found going wheat free was the solution

enqueue · 20/10/2014 10:11

I'm 25 weeks and on zantac, which def helps. I suffer quite a lot with digestive issues even when non-pg so zantac has long been part of my medicine cabinet! I am finding tea makes the heartburn/indigestion worse; I can get away with the odd cup but every so often it tips me over the edge and I feel dreadful for hours. Eating little and often is also key for me, plus exercise.
