Wisdom teeth removed while pregnant

I've been to the dentist today, who tell me I need to have one of my wisdom teeth removed. If not then I will be putting my gums & some other teeth at risk.

I didn't consider until I left whether my being pregnant would be a factor in having this done.

I've had a quick look on the internet, but hoping someone on here may be able to help, as I couldn't really find an answer.

Does anyone know whether the injections I would need to have could damage the baby? Apparently there's two pain killing injections before the procedure.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

I need all 4 of my wisdom teeth out, did you hear about whether it can be done during pregnancy?

I had 2 teeth out while pregnant last year, not wisdom teeth though. They were in a desperate condition. My dentist waited until I was 26 weeks and wanted letters from GP and midwife before he did anything. I had 3 lots of the painkiller injection (which is the max anyone can have) as knocking me out was out of the question (existing medical condition) It probably helps my dentist is based in the dental hospital, so maybe that could be an option for you. DD is now 1 and perfectly healthy so no damage done to her

My dentist wouldn't touch me whilst pregnant.

I had my wisdom teeth removed via general in the hospital and I know there they tested me and told me if it came up positive i would be going straight home as they don't do that for something so small whilst pregnant not much help sorry!

Laura are you sure 3 is the maximum?? I had 5 when they took out a molar and she said that was the maximum and they didn't work

laura2323 · 20/10/2014 22:34

Dentist said 3 was the max of the one I had! Like the OP said there's two types so maybe you had a different one. They don't work on me anymore, I'm awaiting a referral to go to "proper" hospital to be knocked out but wired up to machines :-/

I was due to have wisdom teeth removed then I found out I was pregnant. It had to to be postponed until after I gave birth, as I was having a general anaesthetic.

WrappedInABlankie · 20/10/2014 22:40

I only have general because of that, I felt everything and now i'm scared of them haha

Yes you can have your wisdom teeth out while pregnant, with local anaesthetic.

Had some wisdom teeth problems around 12 wks and my dentist said second trimester is the only time he would go ahead w invasive dental work but he recommended to just wait until after baby comes and have them all out then so that is what I will do.

Local anaesthetic dose is a per kilogram calculation as per the attached diagram. In the UK, one cartridge is 2.2ml, in the US it's 1.8ml.

Unless you know precisely what anaesthetic you had, including the concentration of adrenaline, it's impossible to say.

As an example, when extracting top wisdom teeth I use one cartridge but two injection sites so it may appear like you're having two cartridges but it's not.

For lower teeth it can be a bit different as the anatomy of a nerve block means you don't really want to give more than three injections. Not to do with the drug but to minimise the chance of nerve damage.
