Hi,
I have mistakenly eaten Chevre Goat Cheese (Goat Cheese with a white rind round it), NHS website says it should be avoided as this can contain listeria bacteria!!!

I am totally paranoid now, not sure what to do :(

Read the label first and see if it is pasteurised. (You never know!) But really I wouldn't panic too much. Have you ever had food poisoning from cheese before?

Frankly there's nothing youy can do about it now. If you feel ill seek medical help, but otherwise... Relax! Smile

Oh this brings back memories! I too took every bit of advice seriously. Good on you for protecting your baby but welcome to the beginnning of a lifetime of worry!!

You will most likely - 99.9999999% be fine. Any listeria would cause illness in elderly and weakened people too - and food producers/supermarkets go to great lengths to try not to kill their customers.

And if you do happen to be the 0.00000001% who has a problem and develop D & V, foodsafety.gov says that antibiotics will treat any infection, and protect the baby too.

Never had any food poisoning before, but, I never had this cheese before.

I spoke to Midwife, she wasn't helpful either, was very rude and said lots of stuff on NHS website but not all has been proven.

I hope, fingers crossed that I have not contracted any listeria, but just cannot stop thinking :(

I really, really thought that my MIL had given me something dreadful too - still shudder at the memory. Chances are you will be fine. Try to distract yourself - but if you are like me, then the worry will keep niggling until you know you are OK.

Shame the midwife was so rude. She can't tell you for definite, but she should know how anxious mums to be can feel, and could have been more reassuring.

You will be OK. Keep on MNetting - have a good read of MN Classics, to distract yourself a little.

cowbiscuits · 14/10/2014 15:27

It's unlikely that you'll get listeria. Please don't let it worry you.

The real question is, was it nice cheese? What did you have it with? Was it on some warm crusty bread? It sounds delicious. Only 28 weeks to go til I can have some, oh and pate too!

I bet french women eat stuff like that when pregnant.

NewMumGT · 14/10/2014 15:33

Thanks for some reassurance Ladies!, I have my 20 week scan this Thusrday, so hopefully all is good.
and hope,I have not done anything really really stupid to harm my baby :(

You won't have. You will know by tomorrow morning if (very very very unlikely) you are going to develop vomiting and a fever. If so off to the GP for antibiotics. Otherwise a bit of goat's cheese won't hurt him/her - and s/he will be developing very good taste in utero.

(Cowb. If you drizzle some honey over the cheese and grill the bread once the cheese is on it, it's even better! NewMum - but only once the baby is here!)

Enjoy seeing your little one on the scan.

TurnOverTheTv · 14/10/2014 16:49

Honestly you will be fine x between 2000-2009 there was only 174 cases of listeria confirmed in the uk. That's a teeny tiny amount!

DanyStormborn · 14/10/2014 17:14

Relax it's eaten now and although there is a small risk of listeria the overwhelming odds are that you won't get listeria from one serving of soft cheese.

PeppermintInfusion · 14/10/2014 17:57

Was it from a supermarket? My GP said they are less risky, it's more the artisan ones at markets etc that are more dangerous

NewMumGT · 15/10/2014 13:25

It was from a Cafe, in a Panini :(
I spoke to my GP and he assured me that its highly unlikely. He also said that tests are not staright forward and prescribing antibiotics for 5 days would be an over-kill esp. without the tests.
I dont have any symptoms (vomiting, flu etc), so hopefully it was a stupid mistake that I will not repeat in the future!
