Second baby - what to get?

I have a toddler DS and I'm 20 weeks...so I think we virtually have everything for after birth and baby. Or am I kidding myself? Please help me make a list in case I'm missing anything!

I have a suitcase of mostly immaculate:
Sleepsuits, baby gros, vests, and clothes. We bought pretty neutral stuff for DS so happy to re-use if it's a girl.
Three gro bags
Two cellular blankets
Packs of un-used muslins
Cot and cot sheets - it's still being used by DS so I don't think I need to replace the mattress
Moses basket
Still have all the white noise/ lullaby toys clipped to the cot
Still have a baby bag of sudocreme, snuffle babe, snot sucker, cotton pads - all that kind of stuff. Will obviously replace any out of date medicine.
Box of breast pads
Still have the large knickers for comfort after birth and relatively unscathed!
Jug for warm water for first wee

Need to get:
New mattress for Moses basket
Pads for after birth
New breast pump
Aloe vera gel for my poor torn vagina Grin
Lavender oil for post-birth healing baths
Clary sage oil, raspberry leaf tea and evening primrose oil

Anything else?? I'm sure I read about tons of stuff for post-birth healing last time but can't remember much.

Nappies and wipes but DS is still in nappies so it's no big deal to pick up some newborn size. Hoping to give birth at home in a pool so have just a bikini top for that.

Hi Zebra, I'm same as you although DD is 3.

Basically planning to wing it this time, assume we have everything and if not Boots/ Waitrose are a five minute walk away!

Intrigued by the 'Jug for warm water for first wee'?!

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 13/10/2014 11:22

The cot should have a new mattress too really, if you follow the preventing SIDS guidelines.

Not exactly for the baby but you'll need a new bed for your toddler, and the relevant size sheets, duvet/pillow.

ZebraZeebra · 13/10/2014 12:35

I was unsure about the new mattress for cot - DS has used it since birth, it gets turned regularly, and someone told me the new mattress is only needed if the old one has been stored away?

smogsville the jug of warm water was invaluable in taking away the sting of that first wee!

We'll be co-sleeping as well - the cot is a large co-sleeper pushed flush against my side of the bed.

Its nothing to do with storing away. Its actual use that means its preferable to change it, as part of the reducing SIDs. Can never find a good link for SIDs info though. Obviously it comes down to what your comfortable with, I've got a new one ready even though DS is still using his now that his cot bet is a toddler bed, I'll be moving him to a new single bed soon and his cotbed mattress will be taken to the tip.

I feel like I've bought a lot... 36 weeks now with DC2 but been told this ones a boy and DC1 is a girl. Had to have a few scans last time so got told a few times it was a girl and bought a lot of pink Confused
I've needed a lot of new boy friendly clothes!
Have also bought...
New Moses basket mattress and sheets
New carrycot for pram (other was pink, doh!)
Soft baby towels (others were rough and over washed)
Fleece blankets (others were pulled)
Bath sponges
Bath thermometer
Hanging toys for car seat/pram
New changing bag (used a freebie from the pram last time so treated myself!)
Breast pump
... I don't even think that's everything! I think when I've looked at the things that I've saved in the attic some of them are worn out and have been washed and washed so have spent a few pounds buying new ones.

I've got arnica (to take) and witch hazel (to sprinkle on pads) for postpartum healing (my jug is also ready Grin), if you liked baths you could also get things like Epsom salts, not that I used them as I don't enjoy baths but I know a lot of people recommend them. I've stocked up on paracetamol and cocodamol too, just in case. My cold compress is ready in the freezer to help with any swelling as I found it useful last time, but conversely heat helps with healing so drying off down below with a hair dryer (gentle heat, of course) also helps.

We got a new mattress and sheets (mattress for SIDS advice, sheets because they'd got all worn and manky and I figured I'd treat the new one to fresh sheets!). DC1 was still using the cot and its mattress, however I bought in the sale so the replacement wasn't expensive. Got DC1 a new cotbed with mattress and sheets at the same time.

Buying a new rucksack and small insert bags (because I have decided not to go wild on Pacapod type things!), as current bag is great but just fits all of DC1's stuff and doesn't have the space even for a small bag for DC2, so a rucksack with different sections will be good. I also got a new sling as I learned what I liked with DC1 and we made good use of slings/carriers, particularly in the first 3 months but still a lot until around 1yo when DC1 got very tall and wriggly and not keen on being worn.

I think the most useful thing for us though is knowing who we'll have on hand/other end of the phone to help out with toddler DC1 in case of emergency, when I go into labour (as going to birth centre), when in general need of propping up during newborn phase...

I have a toddler and I am 11+6. I plan to reuse most things, apart from the cot mattress and Moses basket mattress.

I already knew that I had to change them, but my midwife reminded me at my booking in appointment last week. She said that mattresses are the only things I should really replace. Not really sure why they can cause SIDS, but I have had leaflets in the past saying it's a big no to reuse them

ZebraZeebra · 13/10/2014 16:22

Ahhh thanks so much everyone - I wouldn't have replaced it going on what my friend said. So good to know, thanks so much! And so new sheets as well - so glad I asked.

Yes to witch hazel! And a cold compress stored in freezer.
And cabbage leaves Wink
Definitely going to stock up on paracetamol
Bath thermometer! Yes! Our last one died after a few months of use
Dummies. Lots of newborn dummies.
