pregnancy multivitamins

Hello,
Does anyone know if there are any pregnancy multivitamins that do not have iron in. I feel I should be taking vitamins but the ones with added iron make me constipated (nice!).
Thanks

I just take normal multi vitamins. Up to 13 weeks I also took a folic acid pill. They don't need to say 'pregnancy' and I avoided them for the iron-constipation thing too.

I've been avoiding normal multivitamins because of the vitamin A but I'm buggered if I'm paying for pregnacare/alternative - was thinking Tesco version of Berocca (B&C vits) and iron tabs plus eating right will cover me...might be that you have to take individual tabs if you want to avoid iron.

Definitely avoid the normal ones because of vitamin A. Is it just the folic acid you're after? I think I saw a folic acid and vitamin D combination in superdrug.

The only vitamins you actually need are folic acid and vit d. They can be bought as a combined one in some pharmacies or very cheaply individually basically everywhere.

Standard vitamin supplements should be avoided in pregnancy due to the excess levels of vit A.

*just to clarify by standard vitamins I mean non-pregnancy ones

magneticfield55 · 12/10/2014 18:03

Ah, I didn't know iron caused constipation. Explains a lot...

britnay · 12/10/2014 20:26

Its not due to excess levels of vitamin A, its because of having vitamin A from different sources - some are suitable for pregnancy and others aren't.

WhyOWhyWouldYou · 12/10/2014 20:34

britnay NHS choices says: "Do not take vitamin A supplements, or any supplements containing vitamin A (retinol), as too much could harm your baby." Link here: www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/vitamins-minerals-supplements-pregnant.aspx

Thanks for the replies. I was taking vit d and folic before so will go back to that. I thought I should maybe take pregnacare because my diet has gone a bit shite but I started to take them and didn't go to the loo for 4 days so I won't bother again. Just be good if they did preggo multi vits without iron. Thanks again x

It is a good idea to be taking mercury-free DHA and EPA fish oils.

It is very easy to become anaemic in pregnancy so be careful eliminating iron. Constipation is usually from the elevated progesterone levels, not iron in a supplement! Constipation should be resolved with increased fluid consumption and additional fibre.

butternut22 · 13/10/2014 12:15

I have plenty of fibre and fluids and have not been anaemic throughout 2 pregnancies. It is the iron in supplements that cause it for me. I only have constipation when I take pregnacare.
