GTT test - did you have to fast?

My midwife told me I would have the GTT test next week but did not mention fasting from the night before. Does that sound right or like an omission on their part?
Thanks for any answers, as m/w hard to get hold of.

If it's a full GTT the process should be:

  • Nothing but water from about 10pm night before.
  • Blood test followed by a very sugary syrup type drink.
  • Wait 2 hours. You're not allowed to do too much moving / walking about as it's a controlled test so take a book with youth pass the time.
  • Repeat blood test.

I think you can have just have a non fasting blood test for them to determine if they think you need the full GTT so maybe that's what you're having?

Check your paperwork though. My midwife didn't tell me it was a fasting test, but it was included in the info she gave me.

Fasting from 8pm the night before for GTT test here.

Then early bloodtest. Then drink Lucozade. Then wait 2 hours. Then another blood test.

What SilverLinings said here. If it is that sort I second taking a book (or knitting, etc.)

I had to have a GTT at 12 weeks because a routine blood glucose taken at booking in came back slightly raised even though I told them I'd eaten a huge bowl of porridge an hour before the test. Needless to day the GTT came back entirely normal and yes I had to fast from 10pm the night before. Definitely double check with your midwife, I can't see how it would be a valid test if you hadn't fasted before hand.

Agree. Although fasting from midnight the night before here! Nothing but water. Then early morning bloods, 400ml original lucozade (which I had to provide myself), sit down in the surgery for 2 hours then more bloods. Had mine done at GP surgery by my MW and she rang me the next day with my results.

When I had mine I didn't have to fast. I drank lucozade at home then had a blood test 2 hours later at the hospital. Give them a call if you're unsure.

Mine was fasting from midnight, blood test at hospital a glucose drink, sit in a room with all other pregnant people having test done for 2 hours then another test

Thanks for your answers. It looks like they might have forgotten to tell me, so will contact them to confirm.

Mine said fast from 10pm the night before.

MrsQueen · 12/10/2014 08:18

I have mine this week and I definitely don't have to fast - it's a new type of test apparently. I'm having it late pm and eating normally until I go to the hospital.

So worth checking with your midwife, but don't assume they've made a mistake.
