Anterior Placenta, how do they know if it's moved?

I had 20 week scan earlier this week and just noticed on the report that it says 'anterior placenta'. I know this is usually no problem and they move them selves out of the way by the all important giving birth point generally. But how do they know if it is has? Will someone check? Or would further checks only be needed if it was a full on placenta previa (sp?!)?

I don't think it can move from front to back? I think it can move from lower down to further up as the uterus expands but I don't think it can go from anterior to posterior. As you say anterior isn't a problem as long as it's not low down. (Or at least that is what I've been told all the way through with mine.)

They don't scan for placental position unless low lying or a praevia. Anterior, posterior or fundal... Doesn't matter. All normal

I have an anterior placenta too they don't move other than maybe up or down a tiny bit. Low lying placentas can move up out of the way of your cervix but if once it's anterior or posterior that where it stays.

As muggle said it's no probs as long as not low. I felt less movements and only felt proper kicks at around 24 weeks with my other pregnancies (this is dc4) it was much earlier. Once I started feeling proper movement it's not really been that different to any of my other pregnancies. :)

I had my 20 week scan and was told that my placenta was covering the exit and that I would need a re-scan at 36 weeks to see if a caesarean is needed.

Anterior just means "front". It's the "low" message you want to look for. My scan says "anterior not low" i.e. Fine.
Only other thing I've noted (apart from reduced sensation of kicks) is that the midwife has to be a bit cannier to find the heartbeat as it is more easy to pick up the placenta blood flow.

Just to clarify, the placenta doesn't move about like the baby does - it's anchored to the uterus wall. But a low-lying anterior placenta can become not-so-low because, as the uterus grows, the lower part of it grows more than the top.

Thanks guys. I think I was muddling anterior with low. That's all fine then, no notes about it being low.

I was anterior and yes they do rescan u, i was booked to go back at 32 weeks but went for another scan anyway at 22 weeks and it had moved. And it can move to the side not just up cuz mine has moved to the left.
