Early scan

Will be 7 weeks on Sunday and decided I am too impatient to wait for my first scan which could be up to 5 weeks away so have booked in for a private one. DH thinks we should have just waited as he thinks they won't be able to see much at this stage.

Anyone else had experience of an early scan and were they able to detect a heartbeat or see anything?

I've had a few due to bleeding and saw a tiny blob and a heartbeat at 6 and a half weeks then a bigger blob with heartbeat a week later. You should def see something at 7 weeks. Good luck

AlpacaYourThings · 08/10/2014 17:42

I had a scan today and I'm 5 weeks, could see the sac and the yolk inside. Bit too early to see anything else, though.

I had one at the epu at 7+4 due to previous losses. I could see a very small egg sac and a tiny flicker of a heartbeat. The wait between the 12 and 20 week scans is not much easier, but at least it starts to feel a bit more real after the 12 week scan. Good luck!

Seasidedolly · 08/10/2014 21:35

I had a scan at about 8 1/2 weeks and to be honest I only caught the smallest glimpse of the screen before it was turned away again. Though thats because it was a early reassurance scan rather than a private one and they were looking for the cause of bleeding.

There was only a fuzzy little blur on the screen (or thats all I could work out!) and at Southmead they don't listen to the heartbeat so it just shows up on the screen.

I had my 12 week scan last week (was actually 13 weeks, the early scans are apparently not accurate at dating) and it was crazy how much baby had developed considering it was only 4 or 5 weeks since the early scan. We could perfectly see baby and heartbeat and it was much more moving than the early scan!

I probably wouldn't pay for an early scan if there wasn't anything I was worried about, the main benefit of early scans are reassurance rather than seeing the baby.

Saying that, you do feel very relieved when you see the little heartbeat so if it will relieve your anxiety whilst waiting for the 12 week scan, just go for it :)

best of luck

Thought I was 9-12wks, but at scan it turned out just 7....a little blip and a heartbeat you could see pulsing. I'd rather have waited for the 12wk one, which I'm looking forward to.....it's more...'baby-like' Grin

Syd35 · 09/10/2014 12:12

Thanks ladies. Don't know why I'm so anxious this time round, first time round I just went with the flow.

Actually it's probably because this one wasn't planned and has come as somewhat of a surprise to say the least. I'm fretting about all the "wrong" things I've done prior to getting pregnant, like getting very drunk a few weeks back and using a hot tub regularly.

Think an early scan will just reassure me as I have had few symptoms either and don't "feel" pregnant really unlike last time.

Tbh, my early scan only reassured me for a few hours, then I carried on fretting for the next 5 weeks until my 12 week scan anyway. Not helped by the fact that I had no morning sickness or nausea at all!

Syd35 · 09/10/2014 12:34

Eek Tiny that will probably be me too! How far along are you now?

I had a private scan at approx 8 weeks when expecting dd1 and it was brilliant, got to see the heartbeat and the person doing the ultrasound was lovely, spent plenty of time chatting to us and reassuring me everything was ok. We had been trying to conceive dd for 7 years so I just wanted be sure it wasn't a crazy phantom pregnancy or something Grin . I'm now expecting dc2 and I've booked a scan for next Friday when I'll be 7+6, again I just want to see that little heartbeat and make sure everything's ok as I don't have very many symptoms this time around. Like a previous poster said it does only reassure u for a little while and then you can't wait until the next scan. You don't stop worrying until they're in your arms tbh. And then you get a whole new set of worries Smile

juneavrile · 09/10/2014 12:52

Had my first at 8w exactly and have the most adorable pictures and heard the very strong heartbeats. I agree that scan reassurance doesn't last long - but I've felt the couple of private we paid for were worth it. The other was in the looonggg gap between 12 and 20 weeks.

TinyMonkey · 09/10/2014 12:58

I'm 31+2 Syd and it still doesn't feel real!

In retrospect I think I almost found the wait between 12 and 20 weeks harder, although it did pass more quickly, because I felt absolutely fine and wasn't feeling any movement until 23 weeks or so. I wavered over getting a private scan done so many times!

Best of luck though, it's all magical really.

Syd35 · 09/10/2014 19:41

All the best to you too Tiny and all the other expectant mummies Smile

Update if anyone is interested Smile Went for my early scan today and as others mentioned you do not really see too much in great detail but could see the heartbeat and that my dates are pretty spot on. Oh and there is only one in there as DH was worried it would be double trouble as there are a lot of twins on both our sides Smile

It has made me feel a whole lot happier as I have been fretting as not much symptoms this time round and got drunk a few weeks back etc.

We were allowed to take DS in with us and I loved his face lighting up when I told him he is going to be a big brother.

So for anyone thinking of an early scan for reassurance, I'd say it was well worth the £99.

Fabulous OP! Congratulations, I'm glad the scan went well. Smile

mandy214 · 12/10/2014 17:38

Hi congratulations. I was just going to say that I had quite a few early scans because of bleeding. 5+4, 2 sacs visible but nothing else, 7+4, we saw 2 separate heartbeats, 8+5 still 2 heartbeats and then 12+5 was the first time they looked a bit fetal if you see what I mean. They'd just been 'blobs' up until that point.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

Syd35 · 12/10/2014 19:42

Thanks Alpaca hope you see more in your next scan Smile Thanks also Mandy214 how amazing to have twins, when are you due?

That's great news OP, it's such a relief to see that little heartbeat isn't it. I've booked an early scan for Friday, I can't wait!

Syd35 · 13/10/2014 10:00

Hi Bridie yes it sure was, let us know how you get on Smile

Gudgyx · 13/10/2014 11:53

I went for an early reassurance scan as we werent sure on dates, thought we were about 6 weeks though.

Imagine our surprise when we could actually see a baby and were over 12 haha was brilliant!

Birdiegirl · 15/10/2014 14:58

Gudgy congratulations that's brilliant, what a lovely surprise.

I had my early scan today. It was supposed to be Friday but DH had a free morning from work so we rang and got an appointment today - I just couldn't wait!

Well thankfully all is well with our little bean, we saw the heartbeat and it is measuring 7+4, which exactly matches my dates etc. It's so reassuring to see that little heartbeat, best feeling in the world Smile

Syd35 · 15/10/2014 16:03

That's lovely Birdie glad it all went well, we should "catch up" again after the next one Smile

Birdiegirl · 15/10/2014 19:28

Syd that would be lovely! Hope you're keeping well.

Syd35 · 16/10/2014 07:57

Fab Birdie it will be great to hear your updates as I think we are due at a very similar time (mine is 26th May).

I had a private early scan at 8 weeks. I thought it was a great thing to do and worked for us. Yes we could only see a blob and a heartbeat but I found out online, the risk of miscarriage is down to 2% after that, so a felt happy to announce the pregnancy then (including sending photo of me grinning like an idiot holding scan pic to all my friends right outside the clinic!).
I know 8 week scan doesnt guarantee good news at 12 week scan aswell but we felt nothing is ever for sure, and this was enough to go public with.
It also helped me hugely to get through the next month of morning sickness knowing there was actually something in there, which I hadn't quite believed.
