Are you getting a winter maternity coat?

I'm not sure if I can be bothered to splash out on one but if I don't I might regret it when I am freezing my bits off. Baby due just before Xmas so will only get part of winter. Anyone else trying to wing it with existing cover ups or going to shell out for a coat?

I've bought a parka maternity coat from ASOS. I'm due late January and will no doubt wear it for a few weeks/months after so I decided to invest in one. I also thought I'd put a baby sling underneath it after I've had the baby.

Then I'll sell it on ebay next year and get some money back! Xx

I'm due mid-Nov, so far my usual goretex anorak thing is still fitting me (ie i can zip it up all the way), so I'll probably try to keep going with that. If not I might just borrow something off my mum who likes her clothes baggier than I do! Once the baby's here I'll reassess; my usual thick winter coat has space for extra layers so I'm hoping that'll be fine even with a bit of extra flab. I'm hoping to have baby in a sling/carrier quite a bit so might need something to accomodate that; again, I'm thinking an anorak type thing rather than something thick, as the baby and I will hopefully keep each other pretty toasty.

I'd second ebay or a non-maternity coat in an a-line shape or generous cut so you can wear afterwards.. Also you can then fit baby in sling under too!

But don't try and stretch your usual one over the bump... I ruined a lovely winter coat doing that with dc1. Now has odd baggy bit at the front.

It's almost 9 years ago now, but DD was a Christmas baby and I didn't buy a winter coat.

I had a loose fitting long mac type coat that I had when I needed to completely cover up. Not a pg one, just one that I already had that managed to fit over the bump until the last couple of weeks.

I generally wore plenty of layers (handy for the office and changing temps), so did buy mat vests and tops, I used to wear a shirt (either the size too large that I had shrunk from, or 1 of my 2 proper mat ones) with a maternity suit jacket over it to work. At weekends, I had a stretchy woolen poloneck from M&S (well, 2 of my 3 I sacrificed to be allowed to stretch, but they went back into shape afterwards), and the vests.

I also bought a mat long black cardi that went to my knees and tied with a string, and wore a black pashmina over that on colder days. So Christmas Day, I actually wore a vest, the black poloneck (I wear a lot of black anyway), the cardi and pashmina. A nice statement necklace. And a hat and gloves. Frosty ground, including a long walk (waddle) down the 1.5km pier near the house, standing around church yard after mass, plenty outdoors. But able to strip off the layers for indoors.

I changed into yoga trousers, the vest, and my Munster rugby top (I had bought an XXL (very much reduced price) to go over the bump and just got the sleeves shortened!!) when we got home at about 11pm that night, for the run to the hospital. I think I threw DH's down bodywarmer jacket open over the top, for that part.

It all depends on whether you will be outdoors loads and loads, what you really feel is important for a mat wardrobe and what you already have to re-purpose, and your budget. And how you feel the winter weather is going to be too.

i didnt get one last winter but just didnt do up the zip. It had toggles on so i did up the top few and used a big scarf to cover the gap. It would have been lovely to have a coat that fitted but it was just an expense we couldnt afford and i managed fine without it.

PeppermintInfusion · 08/10/2014 11:10

I just got a lovely one from seraphine, as I desperately needed a new winter coat anyway and I have a smarter job than I did before so needed something decent. It isn't too obviously a maternity coat, a-line cut and I think just moving the buttons slightly will mean I can wear it after too.
I'm due the end of February and didn't think I could make it til then without a coat but I'm up north where it's colder.

I got this one and its awesome!

Butterpuff · 08/10/2014 11:51

I'm due end of Feb. I bought a second hand one on eBay. It arrived yesterday cost me £17.50 with P&P is a tailored black M&S 60% wool coat, will keep me nice and warm, look good and not cost a fortune. All I need to do is send it to the dry cleaners for a spruce up and I am good to go. Definitely recommend an eBay nearly new.

EmmaH1108 · 08/10/2014 11:52

I'm debating this at the moment. I guess if I can find one that is reasonably priced then it's worth doing especially as I am not due until early March. Cold times!! x

SignoraStronza · 08/10/2014 12:06

I bought the MaM Aiska poncho so that I could use it afterwards for slinging a baby around in. I got sent the boiled wool version rather than the fleece version I ordered - it actually looks quite smart.

Sorehead · 08/10/2014 12:50

I had a look on eBay before buying my new look coat but struggled to find anything in my size....not sure if that was due to inefficient searching though!

Earlier in the year I bought a non maternity jacket in a size bigger which worked well up to about 30-32 weeks. I recently tried on a coat a further size bigger but I just looked like I was drowning in the coat!

ASOS recently had a few lovely maternity coats which were heavily reduced but only available in a size 6....

kkllww · 08/10/2014 13:15

I was debating whether to buy one too: I'm due early Feb and my normal coat is feeling a bit snug. I've been wearing my berghaus outdoorsy shell over a thick jumper but i've already had a couple of jokey comments from work people asking whether i'm going mountaineering!
Having a winter baby is much more pricey. My last was a summer baby and I got away with buying the bare minimum!

MrsMogginsMinge · 08/10/2014 13:25

I'm due end of Feb and need a smartish coat for work (I'm a lawyer) so got a knee length black pea coat from JoJo - reduced to £50. Plenty of bump room and not too maternity looking but have to hope my boobs don't grow too much!

freelancegirl · 08/10/2014 14:00

I've never actually bought anything on ebay. The whole bidding thing is confusing to me! And DH is too tall for me to wear his coats. Some good suggestions though, thanks. I might have a look in the shops and online. I don't want to look like a bag lady but also don't want to be cold!

Yes having a winter baby is much more expensive. My next post somewhere else will be what to dress the baby in! And also struggling with what double pram to get...

I've hopefully got a JoJo parka with extra zip in panel arriving tomorrow! I'm so excited, I can't remember the last time I spent so much on something new for myself! At 24 weeks I've nearly out grown my current snuggly coat. I've justified the expense as
a) I need it for playground duty
b) I'm planning to baby wear
c) the zip out panel means I can wear it in 'thin' mode
d) I live oop north, so whatever time of year I'm next pg I can pretty much guarantee I'll need a coat!

It's this one in navy. I'm usually a 12 but I've ordered a 14 as I've got chunky arms so I like space for a jumper, I'll also need shoulder room for a sling. Hoping the sizing is ok.

JennyBlueWren · 08/10/2014 18:40

I'm going to buy a big size cheap coat rather than a maternity specific one. My boobs are huge too so pretty much big all over. Been upgraded to an XL jacket at work.

WobbilyFang · 08/10/2014 18:58

I'm due in Dec and not bothering. My coat is quite large though and I'm really warm at the moment.

Aherdofmims · 08/10/2014 19:14

This year primark have exactly the shapeless unfitted coats I wanted for last winter when I was pregnant!

MrsPatMustard · 08/10/2014 21:09

I got mine last year at the NCT nearly new sale for a fiver. Did the job until about 8 months - after that I needed a marquee Grin

omama · 08/10/2014 21:49

I wasn't going to bother, until the weather turned last week & I was getting cold! I walk ds to/from school every day so need to keep warm & dry so decided it was worth the ££ & got the H&M Parka for £30. Due beginning of December so won't get tons of wear out of it while pregnant really, but think it will still look ok afterwards until I'm back down to usual size, then I'll sell it on ebay when I'm done with it.

januarysnowdrop · 08/10/2014 22:07

Charity shop? I bought a lovely enormous duffle coat in Oxfam which saw me through one winter pregnancy. I had to give it back to the shop after dd3 was born as it was ludicrously big, but I was rather sorry to see it go....

Yep, I bought one yesterday. It's a Mamalicious coat (I think they sell this in the UK as well). I am 13 weeks now, so will be pregnant throughout winter. I cycle everywhere, so I need a decent coat to keep me warm and dry. I needed a new wintercoat anyway.
