Anyone not doing NCT?

It's super expensive in London and we might be moving again in the summer so I'm not over-keen to splash out. But, it seems to be expected and the norm. Everyone is so keen to tell me that I'll be bored and lonely with a baby unless I do NCT but I'm struggling to justify it. Anyone else not bothering and hoping to meet friends via baby groups once the baby's born?

We didn't book onto the NCT course as we did a local NHS course specific for multiple births (we have twins). Since then, at a local children's centre course I have met a group of four mums who were on the same NCT course as each other. They are raving bonkers. Properly out and out loons. The discussion about the BIKES they had bought their PFBs for Christmas was astounding. The eldest of these children was 3m on Christmas Day. FFS they were an advert for NEVER joining an NCT course what with all their prejudices against FF...though not one of them lasted past 2 months breastfeeding; they were planning their 2nd children to coincide with each other so they could all go through it all again together & my favourite advice was being told I should never let one twin cry if I was holding the other then they should be put down immediately to hold the crier. Not one of them also had twins or any experience in looking after more than one baby. Aaargh, the memories still make me shudder!!!

I didn't do it. I had 12 of my closest friends pregnant at the same time so didn't need it from the social aspect and found all the knowledge I needed about labour/breastfeeding etc from online / books / NHS free antenatal classes.

My SIL lent me her NCT notes and there wasn't one thing that was completely new to me.

I hate this idea that you'll be alone and friendless unless you do NCT classes.

It's telling that no one says they do them because the course is invaluable, isn't it? It's mainly about forming friendships. Well, fuck that Grin

I just laughed at your post claracluck. I once overheard a similar conversation between a group of NCT mums: the relative merits of Jumperoos vs. door bouncers. Proper intense comparisons like it was one of the most crucial choices you could ever make for your baby!

divingoffthebalcony - I also had them tell me I was irresponsible in my choice of reading material. I was reading Gone Girl at the time & admitted to their horror that to save my sanity I would read it aloud to the twins. They were shocked I would subject my them 3m old twins to such adult themes!!! Needless to say, we don't go out of our way to see these loons!!!

Glad to hear so many people cope without it!

We've scheduled for an antenatal workshop at our home so between that NHS I feel like we're covered and have some money left over for fun things (or a pram...!).
