Morning after pill didn't work... would you continue with pregnancy?

I'm not sure what to do! I have PCOS and endometriosis, I needed fertility meds last time. We're getting divorced, financially I'm struggling... just to be extra safe I took the morning after pill when a condom split! But it's failed. It's the only bloody time I slept with him since he moved out 3 years ago.

Should I continue? I was against terminating till finding myself in this situation but it's really early days, there can't be a heartbeat yet I don't think? Will I have caused the baby to have birth defects by taking the morning after pill?

If I hadn't taken the morning after pill, I'd continue for sure... in such a state right now with crippling anxiety that I'll regret whatever decision I make. Anyone had a healthy child after the morning after pill failed?

My baby is from a failed MAP and I also took a month of contraceptive pills before I found out too. My baby is fine. Neither will cause any harm so do not worry. The MAP has only an 85% success rate so if it was harmful they wouldn't let you use it incase of failure. See him/her as a wonderful blessing and get ready to be a mum again (if that's what you want).

my best friend had a failed morning after pill, was the worst time for her as her marriage had btoken down plus had 3 already, she kept the prwgnancy and her little girl is now 1, healyhy and perfect and the absolute light of all our lives Smile

The other place you could try for advice would be somewhere like BPAS or your local termination services. By contacting them you are not in any way obliged to go through with a termination and as they see women every day who are trying to make up their minds they probably have the most experience in this kind of thing. You may be able to just talk to them on the phone today.

As far as I know levonelle won't cause birth defects and there is caution with Ella-One mainly because the data set in the tests is a bit limited, not because there is any clear indication that it will cause birth defects.

I hope it all works out for you OP Flowers

I had DD after a MAP failure, I wasn't on contraception but was in a secure relationship so although the timing was a bit off there was no question of me continuing the pregnancy.
Like you I was very worried that the MAP would have harmed the baby. The midwife was very unconcerned (in a good way) and basically said it wouldn't affect anything. Googling at the time didn't find any increased risk either.
DD is a completely normal 3 year old. She is very determined though so we sometimes joke that she was just determined to be born and wasn't going to be stopped by a pill.
I wouldn't change anything about the timing of DD except maybe not to bother taking the MAP as it was evidently useless.
It is a shock at the time but once you get used to the idea, it will be like any other pregnancy. Good luck.

Someone I know took the map 3 times, the child is now about 18 & perfect in every way. Sometimes they just want to stick around.

It sounds like you've made your decision. Maybe this will be the joy to be found in a crap situation. Good luck x x

There does not appear to be ANY increased risk of birth defects in the babies of women who have taken the MAP.

If there is a problem with this baby, it is really, really, really very, very, very unlikely to be due to the MAP and would just be a coincidence.

I hope this, as jaffa has said, can be a bright spot now in what is understandably a difficult time.

Best friend took the map and it failed, her daughter is fine. I really wouldn't worry about it, if it caused birth defects they would monitor you after taking it to make sure it worked.

Good luck and I hope you feel better about your situation soon

Hello OP,

You could ask your doctor to contact the UK teratology information service UKTIS (0844 892 0909).

UKTIS is a free service for UK health professionals (funded by Public Health England) and specialises in advising about medicine exposures in pregnancy. They will provide a patient-specific risk assessment based upon the medicine that you took and other factors including any other medicines, and your medical history.

Hope this helps

Hi just thought I'd let you know I took morning after pill. Levonell or something like that. Didnt abort pregnancy and my daughter is healthy and perfect no problems what so ever. Good luck with whatever you decide.
