Mattress protection from leaky boobs?

I'm thinking of buying something to save our very expensive memory foam mattress from my boobs when the time comes (I'm 19+2, so it could be anytime soon).

Neither of us are particularly ecstatic about the prospect of a plastic mattress cover for the next year and a half.

Any thoughts?

I'm wondering about a Kyle sheet (sold for adult incontinence) they're like a quilted padded cotton sheet with a plastic backing.

LOL you don't need that :)

Lots of places do really nice mattress protectors, no incontinence products or plastic required!!

M&S is as good as anywhere - or tesco, dunelm, tkmax, asda....

For leaky boobs? Or your waters?!

For leaky boobs a towel under you should be ok, plus a bra with pads in. You might not leak at all. I never have.

LemonBreeland · 04/10/2014 21:17

Just wear a crop top type thing and breast pads. Surely easier than a horrible plastic sheet.

FWIW I never had much leakage from my boobs in pg. With DC3 I did get some but only enough to leave small patches on my pj top. And by small about the size of a 5p.

From talking to other mummies they have worn bras and breast pads in bed so that prevents leaks. Hope it might help.
I am 34 weeks so not experienced it myself yet. X

Just buy a Medela night time bra and breast pads, really you are going to have other things to worry about, your mattress will be fine...

nevergoogle · 04/10/2014 21:23

bras and breast pads are fine for when you're sleeping, but if you feed laying down in bed as I do, then you need something better.

i use a mattress protector pad from mothercare. it's about 70cm2 and not plasticky and machine washable. i keep one of those under the sheet on my side of the bed. i also fold a muslin and put it under babies head and my boob.

good thinking btw. very easy to forget and end up with a manky mattress.

I bought a M&S quilted waterproof protector. It's a little thicker than the normal mattress protector I use, but not rustley and plasticy at all. And it's tumble dry-able - the JL one isn't and it's more expensive.

My husband didn't want a waterproof one initially but he's barely noticed it.

We used maternity bed pads, they're soft an don't feel plasticky. I don't find it comfy to sleep in a bra, and sleeping topless gave DD easier access through the night.

Blush have I been a little neive? Lol.

Thanks for your tips guys. X

We got a mattress protector when we bought our mattress, it's kind if a terry towelling on top, but waterproof backed. It's not crinkly or plasticy at all, and didn't let anything through when I had a gush of blood at 16 weeks. It tumble dries fine and we just leave it on.

We are both pretty sweaty and I'm not worried about leaky boobs, waters going, child vomit or night sweats post birth.

Depending on how much you want to spend...these also apparently can then be used on DC beds when learning not to have night time accidents - ie good long term...

Another vote for M&S protector - even in the hot summer we had we didn't notice it was waterproof. It's still on our bed (with normal sheet on top) and has caught leaking milk (yes, I use a bra and pads!), baby sick, a leaky wet nappy and water (if BF you'll drink a lot of water in bed) in the last 6 weeks since my boy arrived. We're keeping it on for a while yet...

busyDays · 06/10/2014 18:23

I've never had any leakage while pregnant. When I was breastfeeding I did leak, but a maternity bra and breast pads easily held it all in and I never had any mess on my clothes or bed. The only reason I might have had any use for a mattress protector was because dd had a bad habit of bringing up all her milk right after a feed, but a big towel worked just as well and was much easier to get off the bed at night without having to wake dh.

I got a mattress protector from Dunelm and it is great, it doesn't rustle or make us sweaty. There's the potential for all sorts of bodily fluids to wreck your mattress when pregnant or dealing with a baby. It came in useful to cover the sofa with when my DC had a vomiting bug too Grin

Planetwaves · 06/10/2014 22:54

We have two of the Hippychick ones which aren't hot or plasticky at all.
The glamour of parenthood! I always tell pregnant friends to forget buying cute nursery items and so on: a good mattress protector is worth it's weight in gold! Smile

Wow... you're planning ahead. Hats off to you. Must be your first. ;-) At 19 weeks I was just anxious about scans.
You won't leak heavily until after the birth. It is rare for milk to come pouring out before then. And even after the birth, it can take several days for milk to come it.
Get a nursing/sleep bra and some lansinoh disposable nursing pads. You'll be fine.

Woodenheart · 06/10/2014 22:58

Towel, pads, spare nightie & bra will do you, I only leaked for about 8 weeks, then it settled down.

owainsmum · 06/10/2014 23:12

I leak quite a lot, especially in bed. A bra and breast pads isn't enough, at the moment I have a folded muslin stuffed down my pyjama top and I even soak through that sometimes. To protect the mattress just get a waterproof cover as already suggested, you won't know how much you'll leak until baby arrives.
