500mg paracetamol?

Hi

I know paracetamol is safe to take in pregnancy but does it matter what strength tablets they are? I've got 500mg tablets of paracetamol and would normally take 2 tablets. But I just checked the packet and it said to check with dr if pregnant or breastfeeding. Is that just a precaution or is it because they are stronger than normal?

I have got such a sore neck and headache that I need to take something!

I would (and have) take 2 as normal

ElephantsNeverForgive · 02/10/2014 20:07

No 500mg is standard, they are just covering their backs.

I'm almost 15 weeks. Thanks for the quick replies! I'm lying here in pain and was hoping someone would say it was ok. I have no idea what has caused this neck pain but wish it would go away!

Take 1g every 4 hours, so 2 talets. Fine in pregnancy. No more than 4 doses in 24hours.

Try a warm flannel on your neck as well.

Take the proper dose of 1g (2 tablets). No point taking a dose that doesn't work when it is perfectly safe in pregnancy.

Checked this with both my GP and midwife as I suffer from bad headaches and back pain and kept reading mixed views on patacetamol. Was told they were perfectly fine to take as any other person would, two every four hours if needed Smile

Midwife also told me there was no point in only taking 1 as it won't do any good being half a dose. (Opposed to my pharmacist who suggested ibuprofen would be the best thing for back pain in pregnancy due to the anti-inflammatory properties Shock)

well the advice with ibu is different from country to country...
most say ibu is fine uring second trimester if no other complications/bleeding.
but it is always best to check with dr/chemist/midwife.

The reasons why ibuprofen isn't recommended in the first or third trimester:

Interesting mausmaus I've always been told to steer well clear of ibuprofen entirely, including from my consultant. Its strange how advice differs from place to place.
