Stupid question regarding mothercare sleepsuit sizes...

Mothercare do an array of sizes for the exact same set of sleepsuits (basic white) on their website:

0-3 months
Early baby (5lbs)
New baby (10lbs)
Tiny baby (7.5lbs)

(In that order weirdly!!)

And then all the sizes from 3 months upwards.

Does anyone know what weight 0-3 months caters for? And how many vests and sleepsuits of each size is it worth getting for everyday use at home??

And which size should I take in the hospital bag?

Up to 14 pounds they are huge! If you want them to fit buy tiny baby they will fit a baby up to 8 pounds. If you don't mind them being very baggy on a average size baby then newborn.

You need to look at the weights not ages. My experience is this

Early baby - fits up to 7lbs (in know it says 5lbs something)
Tiny baby - up to 8lbs
Newborn - up to 10/11 lbs
0-3 months - up to 14lbs

Buy a couple of packs of newborn size and see how you get on. My DH had to go out and buy tiny stuff for my two after they were born. DD was 6.8lbs and needed tiny baby size, DS was 6lbs and needed early baby size. Newborn was far too big for them.

Ok that's lovely, thank you. I already have 3 tiny baby vests and sleep suits so will leave the 0-3 ones at home and buy some newborn size.

On average, how many vests and sleep suits does a baby get through in a day? Basically... How many of each should I buy of each size for normal everyday use?

Beccajoh has the sizing pretty spot on

Bellyrub1980 · 01/10/2014 19:00

Ah that's great, thanks beccajoh. I guess I could always order them online and get them delivered as and when I anticipate needing them! Rather than stockpiling every size before the baby is born. Who knows how big our babies will be afterall!!

Incidentally it's not a stupid question. Wish I'd thought to ask it before DD1. I hadn't clocked the Newborn size let alone the rest. I just bought 0 - 3 months. DD1 was 6lb1oz cue my Mum dashing to get newborn (and again to get ever decreasing sizes)

PenguinsIsSleepDeprived · 01/10/2014 19:03

I would swap the tiny for newborn. Most full term babies can go into newborn.

That said, my smallest was 8lb so all were straight in 0-3.Smile

You'll probably need 1 vest and 1 sleep suit for day, and one if each for night, but of course he/she will be sick and/or poo through them! Don't get loads - they wash well and you'll be doing constant washing Grin.

I agree with PP above - my DD was teeny when she was born, under 5lbs, and Mothercare was one of the few places that did clothes in her 'size'. Even then the 'early baby' clothes were big on her and fitted her until she was about 6-7lbs. She was a skinny wee thing though, a chubbier 6-7lber might not have fitted them.

I'd say be wary of buying too many just now in case your baby is v small/big. Just get a few to keep you going - you'll prob get some as gifts too, I got loads!

I think with dc3 I had 6 vests and 6 sleepsuits in each size starting with First Size then 0-3 etc, along with 2 cardis. This was mainly because I had older dc and would be doing a wash everyday anyway.

If you don't want to wash so often then buy more Smile. People did gift clothes/sleepsuits but not generally in the first sizes.

We had a few newborn ones that lasted about the first month. After that they were too small and we used the 0-3 month ones. We received a lot of sleep suits as gifts so I wouldn't get too many, you can always buy more. Our baby was quite sicky and also seemed to have a nappy explosion every time she went in the car seat so we probably used about 3 a day to start with. She's slowed down now and usually gets through the day without needing a change of clothes (aged 6 months). Enjoy buying things for your lovely new baby, it's an exciting time!

Thank you for all the advice. Making these final decisions is making it all very real! Haven't had the head space to think about it till now, but now I'm on maternity leave it's all systems go!!!
